Angel's Conference Room
Angel is sitting at the conference table alone. After a few moments he presses the buzzer and asks Harmony where everyone is. She comes through and tells him that Lorne is missing in action, Wesley is baby-sitting Illyria, and Gunn is still in hospital. As Harmony leaves, Spike walks in carrying a briefcase and asking where the rest of them are as this is a very important meeting. When Angel is pleased that someone realises that, Spike spoils it by continuing that it's important because it's his first as a loosely affiliated member of the group. As Angel starts the meeting there is a pop and a hiss and Angel looks at Spike, who says, "What? I'm listening" then raises his hand above the level of the table to reveal the can of beer he's holding, "With beer."

Angel gives up on the meeting and says this isn't a meeting, it's just Spike being annoying. Spike picks up the sheet Angel had in front of him and starts to complain about always being on reconnaissance. He wants a decent gig, like saving the girl. Angel says "Handsome man saved me from the monsters".
Spike asks what he means and Angel tells him that that was the first thing Fred said to him in Pylea. He tells Spike that Fred was trapped and nearly crazy, but still brave. He says he shouldn't have let her come to W&H, bad things always happen there. Spike says bad things happen everywhere and anyway she wanted to be there. Then Spike realises Angel is going to do something stupid. Angel says he already has, he went to W&H and keeps trying to convince himself that he did the right thing. He knows the Senior Partners are up to something and he doesn't want to wait to find out what it is. Spike says it would be handy if they knew someone with information on the Senior Partners.

Lindsey's Apartment
Eve says there is no way she will help, but Angel tells her this isn't a negotiation. Eve says there's nothing he can do to her, she's been trapped in the house for weeks, but Angel says she's not trapped she's hiding, using the symbols to keep hidden from the Senior Partners and unless she helps, he's going to let them know where she is. Just then the building starts to shake and the symbols start to disappear. Eve blames Angel, but he says it wasn't him. She begs him not to let the Senior Partners get her; she'll do anything he wants.

The door bursts open and a huge guy is standing in the doorway. He looks round the room, but there's nobody there, just the curtains wafting in the breeze of the open windows.

Main

A Bar
A demon barman is singing (very badly) for Lorne. The barman wants to know if he's getting married, while a fed-up Lorne is trying to get drunk. He tells the barman that he'll have a June wedding and it's going to rain, so get a tent. The barman is very happy and wants to know if there'll be a Carlos junior, but Lorne has had enough. He tells the barman he's tired of pretending everything's going to be ok, he's tired of being too scared to tell people what he thinks, so he tells them what they want to hear. Most of all he thinks Happy Hour should be banned since there's nothing happy about this hour or any other. He says he started drinking when he found out a girl he loved was dying and he kept hoping the last drop would 'take him the distance', but it never worked. So now he was going back to the 'belly of a very ugly beast' to pretend that he could help because 'that's what the green guy does'.

Wolfram & Hart
Angel shuts down the building with security. He tells Spike to stay with Eve and if anything gets past security he's to kill it. Spike asks where Angel's going and he says, "To see my lawyer".

The Hospital
Angel goes to see Gunn. He tells him about the Senior Partners sending someone after Eve and asks if there's some way he can protect her. Gunn just says he doesn't know. Angel tells him to think it over and when he still says he doesn't know Angel tells him he paid a high price for what's in his head and he should use it. Gunn tells Angel there's a proviso in his contract that allows him to take custody of a wayward employee.

Angel goes to leave, then turns back and tells Gunn that he should feel bad about what he's done, and that he should feel bad for the rest of his life, which he will because he's a good man. Angel says that the thing about atonement is that you never run out of chances, but you have to take them, and Gunn can't hide in a hospital room.

Wesley's Office
Wesley is sitting on a chair when Fred comes up behind him. She asks him to tell her a joke. "Two men walk into a bar. The first man orders a scotch and soda. The second man remembers something he'd forgotten and it doubles him over with pain. He falls to the floor shaking, and then through the floor and into the earth. He looks back up at the first man but he doesn't call out to him. They're not that close."
Fred says, "Yeah, you always know where you are" and Wesley replies "it's my particular skill."
Fred says, "This is only the first layer. Don't you want to see how deep I go?"

Wesley wakes up and Illyria is standing behind him. She complains about him calling her names and talking in his sleep. He says he had a nightmare. Illyria tells him that she remembers when nightmares walked among them, and she wonders whom they angered so to be trapped in humans' heads. Wesley says that this world must be a terrible disappointment to her, that he's not impressed with it himself. Illyria asks him why he doesn't leave.

Angel's office
Eve is complaining that she's going to die. Angel tells her she's under his protection, but he can take it away anytime. He then asks what she is. She says she's the liaison for the Senior Partners. She tells Angel there are many layers at W&H and that she was created to do the Senior Partners bidding and Angel realises she's an immortal. He asks why she's there and she says to watch and pass any messages from the Senior Partners on to him. She tells him that she may know things but she doesn't have access to them, that the one person who knew all about the Senior Partners was Lindsey. She tells Angel that Lindsey probably knows more about Angel than Angel does himself. Angel realises that was why the Senior Partners took him, so that he and Lindsey couldn't sit down and talk. Eve says Lindsey is now in some Hell dimension.

Lindsey's Alternate Reality
Lindsey is in bed with a blond. A boy comes into the room and jumps on them. Lindsey asks what they want to do today.

Lindsey's Alternate Reality
Lindsey comes out of the front door of the perfect suburban house, picks up his newspaper and a kids skateboard and waves to the neighbours.

Angel's Office
Spike is going on about the number of Hell's there are. Angel doesn't care, just as long as he can get Lindsey so that they can find out what he knows about the Senior Partners. Spike says the only one who says Lindsey knows anything is Eve who will do anything to get him back. Eve asks Lorne to tell them she's not lying and he says, "No one can fake it through the Pina Colada song. Not once the chorus kicks in."
Spike says they're looking for a 'hell dimension in a haystack'. Then Gunn enters and says he knows where Lindsey is.

Lindsey's Alternate Reality
Lindsey is asking his 'son' questions for a quiz. His 'wife' tells him she needs a bulb from the basement, and when he isn't keen to get it she tells him she needs it now. He goes through a door and down the steps to the basement.

Wolfram and Hart garage
Gunn tells Angel and Spike that he started checking things out when he heard from Harmony because he thought there had to be a precedent. And he found one. Some years before a troublesome employee was sent to a holding dimension. Angel asks if this means the Senior Partners hadn't decided what to do with Lindsey but Gunn says it's their version of a penalty box. Angel asks how they will get there and Gunn tosses him a set of car keys and says, "How about taking the Camaro."

A Suburban Street
The car is driving along a deserted street on it's own. Angel says he's 'weirded out' by this, and Spike asks if he never saw Knight Rider. Gunn tells them the car was designed to get to this dimension and once they get there they can get Lindsey and find the Wrath. Spike says that doesn't sound good and he bets there's fire.

Spike can't believe Lindsey has been put in the 'burbs. Angel thinks it's a reward not a punishment for trying to kill him.

Fred's Apartment
Wesley tells Illyria she should leave, but she says she can't. He can't believe that the great Illyria can be limited to one small world. She says she went to many worlds, so Wesley tells her to go to another world where she would be welcomed like she never will be here. He tells her she should go. She turns and grabs him, then lets him go saying everything's too small, she can't breathe, she can't speak because she doesn't know what will come out. She should kill him for challenging her. Wesley tells her to go with him.

Lindsey's Alternate Reality
Lindsey collects his paper and waves to the neighbour exactly the same as before.

The car pulls up and Spike looks out at the sunny day and says they only need to open the door to be on fire. Gunn opens the door and both Angel and Spike recoil from the sun screaming. Gunn looks at them and tells them it's an alternate dimension sun, not the frying variety. Gunn asks them if they're getting out.

Angel, Gunn and Spike go to Lindsey's door. Lindsey's 'wife' opens the door and they ask for Lindsey. She asks them in and Lindsey appears, saying he didn't know they had company. Angel asks him if he knows who they are and he doesn't. He doesn't even know who Wolfram & Hart are. Angel tells him the life he's living is a lie, but Lindsey doesn't find this funny and asks them to leave.

Angel's Office
Eve is complaining that they should be back by now. Harmony tells her that she's safe, nobody can touch her without the boss's say so. Eve says they don't understand, the Senior Partners won't stop because of a piece of paper. Lorne is telling her to calm down, she's safe, when all the alarms in the building go off. Lorne asks how bad the thing W&H will send after Eve is on a scale of " Nought to Terminator".

W&H Corridor
A lift door opens and the guy who blew the doors off Lindsey's apartment steps out.

Angel's Office
Lorne, Harmony and Eve are watching through the window as the guy walks along the corridor. Harmony can't believe that he worries Eve, as he's 'just a suit'. Then an armed guard goes over to him and orders him to stop as he shouldn't be there. The guy puts his fist through the guard's body. Lorne, Harmony and Eve scream.

Lindsey's Alternate Reality
Angel tells Lindsey he can't believe he's saying this but they are there to help. Lindsey tells him he's had enough and they're to get out, but Angel grabs Lindsey and says, "Maybe this'll help" and tears the medallion Lindsey is wearing off his neck. Lindsey falls to the floor. When he looks up he recognises Angel and sees the knife in his waistband and tells him to 'make it quick'. As Angel helps him up he tells Lindsey that if he were going to kill him it wouldn't be quick.

Lindsey's 'wife' comes in and Spike tells her her husband was showing them 'a thing', but she raises her hands and starts firing the machinegun she's holding. They all dive for cover, except Lindsey who just stands there. Angel pulls him into cover and tells them all to run for it as he goes for the wife. He takes the bullets as the others make their getaway.

Outside, the car is gone. An ice cream van pulls up and the driver starts shooting at them. They rush back inside and tell Angel their ride has gone. Then Lindsey's 'son' comes down the stairs shooting at them. They shove a sofa at him and he collapses. Gunn says he thinks there's a way out through the basement, but Lindsey doesn't want to go down there, he says they'll die. When Gunn tells him "not today", Lindsey says, "Every day."

Angel's Office
The guy enters the office and Harmony jumps on his back and grabs his head trying to break his neck. He just looks puzzled, then throws her across the office. Lorne and Eve run for Angel's lift as the guy comes towards them.

Lindsey's Basement
The basement is a torture chamber. Spike finds a pile of hearts and asks whose they are. Lindsey says they're his. Angel tells Spike to try to find a way out and Spike says, "The faster we get out of here the better."
A fire appears behind a door and Angel asks if that's the Wrath. Gunn says it could be. Then Lindsey says, "He's coming".
When Gunn asks who Lindsey just says "he always knows" then a large demon appears. Spike and Angel fight the demon, but everything stops when Gunn puts Lindsey's medallion on. Angel tries to stop him, but Gunn says that a void is impossible, if one leaves another has to stay. The door to the fire opens and Gunn tells them to go, if they don't leave before he forgets they'll be trapped. Angel says that he knew and didn't tell him, but Gunn doesn't answer. Then Angel tells the others to go and when Spike says he can't be serious, he just repeats that they should go. Angel, Spike and Lindsey go through the door into the fire, while Gunn starts trying to remember why he's in the basement and the door to the fire shuts. Then a woman's voice calls out, "Honey, what are you doing down there?"
Gunn says, "I don't know. I must be losing my mind."

W&H Garage
Lorne is trying to find the keys to a car. He grabs a set and clicks it, but there are so many cars he can't find the one they have the keys to. Eve spots it and they run to it and get in. Just as Lorne starts to drive away, Angel, Spike and Lindsey fall from the sky, landing on the bonnet.

Eve rushes to Lindsey and asks what they've done to him. Angel says he'll be fine, while Spike says they were shot "Thanks for asking".

Lorne starts to tell them that there's a really well dressed guy on his way to get them, when he realises Gunn isn't there and asks where he is. Angel says he stayed behind. Lorne starts to tell him they don't leave people behind, but he stops when he sees Angel's look and says, "That is what we do now."

They hear heavy footfalls and the door to the basement opens. Angel says, "He is well dressed."

Eve begs the guy "not to do this" but the guy just says, "You know how it works". Then he takes a contract out of his pocket and Eve signs it. The guy introduces himself as Marcus Hamilton, the new liaison to the Senior Partners. He explains that Eve has just signed over her responsibilities to him as well as her immortality. Hamilton says he has some ideas, but Angel says "This is my house and my ideas are the only ones that matter".
Hamilton agrees and says the Senior Partners are very happy with Angel and that he can't wait to work himself into the mix. Then he leaves.

A Rooftop
Wesley asks Illyria if she's all right. He tells her that the walls don't close in as much if you can't see them. She says she used to be a god to a god and now she's trapped on a roof. She says he doesn't worship her at all, and he replies that she can't leave. She says she doesn't know, but she reeks of humanity. Wesley tells her not to flatter herself.

Illyria can't understand why people shut themselves in rooms when their world is already so small. Wesley tells her that there are things worse than walls, that there are truths that would burn through them if they saw them every day. She says humans are weak and Wesley agrees.

Angel's Office
Lorne is removing bullets from Spike while Angel is putting on a new shirt.

Lindsey calls Angel the hero of the hour, but Angel says he's not his hero, he's his warden. Angel tells him he only wants what he knows about the Senior Partners. Lindsey tells him that Hell is here, it's all around but Angel says Holland Manners tried to tell him that three years ago and it's all about how you see the glass. Angel says they could philosophise all night, in fact they could do it forever, he doesn't need to eat, drink or sleep, then he asks Lindsey, "What about you?"

Lindsey tells Angel the apocalypse is here, he's just too stupid to see it. Spike says he'd know if there was an apocalypse under his nose. Lindsey says it's not an apocalypse, it's the apocalypse. Lindsey tells Angel that the starter pistol went off a long time ago and they're playing for the bad guys, that every day they sit behind their desks and little by little they accept the world as it is, but heroes don't do that, they fight it. He says Angel sits behind his desk and signs the cheques just like the Senior Partners wanted. Angel realises they're being kept busy so that they don't see what's going on. Lindsey says, "The war's here Angel. And you're already two soldiers down."

Gunn's Alternate Reality
Gunn is asking his 'son' questions for a quiz. His 'wife' comes in and tells him she needs a bulb from the basement. Gunn tries to get out of going for it, but she says she needs it so he heads for the basement.

Rating and Comments:
There was a lot of information hidden away in this episode, but it had the feeling of mainly being a way to get Lindsey back and it didn't quite sit right with me. Having said that, the information we are given is very interesting.

So the Senior Partners idea of Hell is a Groundhog Day suburban perfection, interspersed with a touch of daily torture. Trust them to come up with that one!

And the apocalypse has already started, with Angel being kept tamed behind a desk. Give him lots of little fiddley things to deal with and he won't see what's in front of his face, won't see the big picture. It's a prime example of keep your friends close and your enemies' closer.

Angel has started making the tough decisions lately. He could have saved Fred, but chose not to because he couldn't let thousands of others die in her place. Now he's left Gunn behind in the alternate dimension. Both very difficult decisions to make, especially with the way he's running out of friends/family/co-workers.

Wesley's dream of Fred and then later when he tells Illyria that some truths are too painful to remember are very interesting. I see it is as a representation of his relationship with Angel. Wesley has had his memories altered and if he could remember what he had done to Angel (and in turn that Angel tried to kill him) it would cause him a lot of pain and it would distance him from Angel, making them 'not that close'.
