Fred's Lab
Wesley is watching Illyria through the glass as she stands in Fred's lab.

Angel walks in. Wesley tells him Illyria is either counting oxygen molecules, analysing a petrie dish she put in her mouth or possibly sleeping, he's not sure. Angel tells Wesley he can't watch Illyria on his own, they need to study her and it's too much for Wesley, he needs to sleep. Wes wonders who could test her as they are running out of people, but Angel says he's not given up on Gunn and he's going to get him back. Wesley tells him that Illyria is difficult and testing her may get someone killed. Angel says they'll get Spike to do it and Wesley agrees. Angel tells Wesley he needs him working and not off drinking himself stupid somewhere. Then he points out bluntly that Fred is dead and Wesley isn't, he needs to start acting like it.

Wesley's Office
A couple are sitting at Wesley's desk telling him about they're son who was knocked down by a hit-and-run driver. When Wesley asks if the police Homicide department have any leads, they say their son isn't dead, in fact, despite being hit at about 60mph, he got up with barely a scratch on him.

Wesley asks where they heard about W&H and the couple say they received a phone call from a police officer after the incident who told them their son was different and there was an LA law firm that dealt with such things and could help them. They tell Wesley that their son is downstairs, they told him they were setting up a trust. Wesley phones Angel to ask him to come to his office. They ask if Wesley will help them and he says "Of course".

The Corridor
Angel is walking to Wesley's office when we hear a lift ping and a voice calls "Hey, Dad". Angel turns round with a look of shock and horror on his face and sees Connor standing there.

The Corridor
Angel is in shock and says, "What? What are you…….." then the husband comes out of Wesley's office and when Connor repeats "Dad", he says, "Yeah it's ok, come in."
Connor walks past Angel and goes to his parents.

Wesley sees Angel and introduces him to Mr and Mrs Riley and they're son, Connor. Wesley tells Angel that Mr and Mrs Riley are there to discuss some issues that have arisen with their son, but Angel says there must be some mistake, they can't help them.

Angel's Office
Wesley explains to Angel what happened to Connor, but Angel is adamant that they are not going to take the case. Wesley asks why not, it's what they do after all and these are good people. Angel says that's all the more reason to get them out of there; "We know what this place does to good people".

Gunn's Basement in the alternate dimension
A demon is walking round as Gunn lies on a table with his heart cut out. Slowly Gunn's chest heals and he jumps up with a start. He then looks round in confusion wondering what he went there for. The demon hands him a light bulb and Gunn goes back upstairs.

A Training Room
Spike gets hit and goes flying.

Illyria asks him why he bothers to get up. An annoyed Spike tells her that they have to lay down some ground rules
1.    No hitting him in the face
2.    He hits her in the face and she tells him how it feels so he can write it down on his clipboard
3.    No touching his clipboard
4.
As he starts on number 4 Illyria hits him again. This time he hits her back, but she just looks at him then sends him flying across the room.

Just then the door opens and Wesley enters asking, "How goes it?"
Illyria says she's been hitting 'the half breed'. Spike says there's been a bit of a rough start but he'll break her. Wesley points out she's not a horse and that the room is full of equipment to test her, Spike doesn't have to just let her hit him. Spike says their going over the basics, but he's writing it all down.

Illyria can sense the frustration in Wesley, and he tells them he just had a slight disagreement with Angel. Spike says, "Old broody pants got you wound up eh? Keep in mind he can't get laid without going crazy. It makes it funny."
Illyria says in her day they'd be killed for their insolence. Wesley tells her they're not being insolent, although Spike says he is. Wesley says it's just that he doesn't always understand Angel. When Illyria points out that Wesley follows Angel anyway, he's loyal to Angel, Wesley says it's because he trusts Angel to know what he's doing and that he's earned his loyalty.

Angel's office
Angel is furious with Hamilton, the link with the Senior Partners. He wants to know what his son is doing there. Hamilton says he's not some little girl and that he and Angel won't be having sex on the sofa any time soon. Angel says he had a deal with the Senior Partners. Hamilton tells him the Senior Partners changed everyone's memories to give Connor a happy life. Angel agrees and says in return he went to work for W&H. Hamilton says the Senior Partners wouldn't want to upset such a profitable deal. Angel asks him if he means it was a coincidence, but Hamilton says it's not, it's someone sending Angel a message.

The Rileys car
Connor is sitting in the back of the car as he and his parents drive to a motel. Connor's mother asks what they are going to do now and his father says there must be someone else who can help them. Connor leans forward and tells them they can stop pretending, as he knows they were at W&H about him being hit by the van. He jokes with them about it and says they should be pleased he's ok. He tells them it may be weird but they'll get through it, everything will be fine. Just then the door of the car is ripped off and Connor is dragged out by a demon. A second demon attacks his parents. Connor hits one of them and sends it flying over the top of a car. He can't believe what he's done but the demon quickly returns. As it's about to attack him Angel leaps across the roof of the car behind him and attacks the demon. He fights both demons killing them both. Connor can't believe that Angel nearly broke one of them in half, he thinks it's the coolest thing he's ever seen. Angel is thrilled and starts to tell him about another time, when Connors mother walks round from the back of the car supporting his father. She says the father needs a hospital, but Angel tells them they have doctors at W&H.

Wolfram and Hart
Angel and Connor are walking along the corridor. Angel tells Connor his father is in good hands, or claws as the case may be. Connor asks what attacked them and Angel tells him it was some kind of demon, they're looking into it. Connor asks if that's what he is, a demon. Angel tells him as far as they can tell he's a well-adjusted kid with enhanced abilities. When Connor just says "Ok", Angel is surprised he's taking it so well, but Connor just asks what should he do, complain?

Connor starts to ask Angel questions about being a vampire
Is he 500 years old? Angel is about to say no when he suddenly gets worried and asks if he looks 500 years old.
Does he make out with other vampires all the time like they do in Anne Rice books? Angel says no, then thinks again and says he used to.
Connor asks if he at least has a girlfriend? Angel says he can't afford one. Connor tells Angel he must be lonely but Angel replies that he keeps busy.
Connor asks if they fight crime and defeat evil and if everyone there is a superhero? Angel tells him it's mostly paralegals and secretaries.

Just then Spike shoots out a door in front of them calling Illyria all sorts of names. As Spike goes back in, Angel asks Connor if he'd like to meet some of his co-workers. He carefully looks round the door to find Illyria holding Spike on the ground with her foot on his head. Angel calls Spike and Illyria over. Connor asks what she is and Angel tells him he doesn't know but she's some kind of ancient demon. Connor then asks if Illyria has any special powers and Spike replies that she can hit 'like a Mac truck', timeshift and possibly talk to plants. Illyria announces she wants to keep Spike as a pet. She walks over to Connor and says he's getting warm, he lusts after her. Connor gets very flustered, then whispers to Angel that he's "Always had a thing for older women."
Angel says under his breath that that was supposed to have been fixed. Connor says, "What was that?" and Angel quickly says, "Nothing".
Just then Lorne walks in. Connor is very impressed by him saying, "This place is way better than college."
Lorne tells Angel Wesley has something he needs to show him. As they leave Connor tells Spike and Illyria it was nice to meet them.

As they walk out the door, Angel asks Connor which college he goes to and Connor tells him Stanford. Angel is impressed and is obviously very proud.

Lorne's Office
Wesley has found out that the demons are the henchmen of a very powerful warlock called Cyvas Vale. Connor asks what the warlock wants with him and Wes says that if he's using his demons he's not trying to remain anonymous. Angel heads for the door and when asked he tells them he's going to pay Mr Vale a visit. Connor offers to go with him, but Angel says no, so Wesley tells him they don't know enough about Vale to go and see him. Angel gets annoyed and tells Wesley to 'drop it'. As he walks out, the others watch him leave with looks of concern on their faces.

Wesley's Office
Wesley goes to his office and picks up the phone. He tells Harmony to get him everything they can find on Cyvas Vale.

Cyvas Vale's residence
An ancient demon, with several drips coming from a stand into him sits on an ornate chair. A dead demon flies into the room followed by Angel. Vale says he wasn't trying to kill Angel's son he just needed Connor to know what he was capable of. Angel asks how he knows about Connor and Vale says, "Because I made him".

Wesley's Office
Harmony brings in everything they could find on Vale. She then says she also found 'this' wandering around human resources, and Illyria walks in. She says Spike is resting.

Lorne finds Vale listed on accounts paid. He says Vale specialised in memory altering, time shifting etc, and he was paid a massive amount for the last job he did. Wesley looks at the contract and realises Vale supervised some of the most powerful spellcasters on the West Coast in that job, then he notices it was on the day they took over W&H.

Cyvas Vale's residence
Vale asks Angel to help him up. As Angel helps him he pulls out one of Vales drips. Vale quickly tells him one of Connors memories from when he was a child. Angel says it didn't happen, but Vale says Connor remembers it happening. Angel realises it was Vale who created Connors memories.

Angel asks what Vale wants and he replies he wants someone killed, Sahjan. Angel says Sahjan is trapped, but Vale wants finality to his affairs. A glowing box appears in Vales hand and he asks Angel if he knows what an Olan Window is. It allows warlocks to see the past as it was. However, if it were broken near someone who had had their memories altered they would remember everything. When Angel takes a step towards him Vale asks him if Angel's sure he can kill Vale before he can destroy Connors memories. Angel reluctantly agrees to kill Sahjan, but Vale says that if it was that easy he'd do it himself. Angel realises that the prophecy says that Connor is the only one who can kill Sahjan. Vale then tells Angel that he gave Connor his happy memories, but now he needs Angel to turn him back into a killer.

Angel's Office
Connor can't believe Vale wants him to kill someone and asks Angel why. Angel tells him it's because he's special. Wesley can't understand why they are even thinking about killing Sahjan, but Connor says it's not Wesley's family that's being threatened. Connor then asks Angel if Sahjan is strong and Wesley tells him that the last time Angel and Sahjan met, he nearly killed Angel. Connor asks again why Angel thinks he can beat Sahjan and Angel repeats that it's because he's special. Connor realises they have no choice, despite Wesley's protestations otherwise.

Gunn's Basement
Gunn is lying on a table about to have his heart cut out by the demon when Hamilton walks down the steps. Hamilton stops the demon and pulls Gunn's medallion off his neck. He then tells Gunn he has a proposition for him since his friends don't seem to be doing anything to get him out. The Senior Partners want to make a deal with him, but Gunn just asks for his medallion back. He puts it on and tells the demon to get on with it as "this heart won't cut itself out". Hamilton leaves as Gunn starts to scream and beg for mercy.

Training Room
Angel is giving Connor advice. Connor asks if Angel's going to hold Sahjan down while he stabs him. Angel tells him there's no reason why he can't have help. Connor says he'll do it his way, then he goes to the weapons hanging on the wall and asks if he should take one of them with him, but he knocks them down, much to Angel's amusement. Angel suggests he should leave the weapons for now and starts to give Connor advice on how to fight Sahjan like using his speed and not letting him slow him down. Connor asks Angel if he really thinks he can do this, and Angel says he knows he can.

Records
Illyria can't understand why Wesley is so concerned about memories. As Wesley looks through a file, she asks him if having different memories makes them different people since Fred was different after her memories were changed. Wesley asks about Fred's memories, if Illyria can see what they were before. She can't and she asks if this means Fred was a different person to who he thought she was. Wesley is looking at a sheet of paper and he says, "We all are". He puts the paper down and walks out followed by Illyria.

We see the paper. It is a contract signed in blood by Angel.

Sivas Vale's residence
Angel and Connor arrive at Vales. Connor tells Vale that he's going to fight Sahjan and then he's to leave his family alone or Connor will do various nasty things to him.

Connor goes through to the area where the urn is with Angel still giving him advice about fighting Sahjan. Connor tells Angel to stop as he's freaking him out. Angel stops Connor again and fixes his collar before letting him go to where the urn is.

Connor walks over to the table where the urn is then turns and asks what he's supposed to do, but a wall has appeared between him and Angel.

Vale tells Angel that Connor can't see them, as he can't let Sahjan get out as he has a tendency to try and kill Vale.

Connor goes over to the urn and lifts the lid off. Mist comes out of the urn and forms into Sahjan. Sahjan thanks Connor for letting him out and tells him he'll grant him three wishes. Connor says, "Really?" but Sahjan says no, but he's still grateful. Then Connor tells him they are supposed to fight but Sahjan can't understand why. Then he realises who Connor is and tells him he thought he'd be more intimidating. Connor tells him to deal with it.

Sahjan throws the lid of the urn at Connor and hits him in the face with it. Connor falls to the ground shocked that at how much it hurt.

Angel tries to get to Connor but is stopped by a magical barrier. Vale tells him this isn't his fight and when Angel turns to face him he is holding the Olan Window to stop Angel doing anything.

Sahjan is beating Connor as Angel watches helplessly through the barrier.

Angel turns again and Vale no longer has the Olan Window. Wesley has appeared in the doorway with Illyria and he now has the Window. He tells Angel he knows he changed the world and sold them out to Wolfram and Hart, but Angel is just concerned about the Window. When Angel tells Wesley to give him the Window, Illyria sends Angel flying across the room saying Wesley doesn't follow him anymore.

Connor is being badly beaten by Sahjan who has him pinned to the table.

Wesley says Angel changed the world and Angel tells him Connor is his son. Wesley asks if Fred was the price for whatever Angel did and if the Window will bring her back. Angel tells him it won't bring her back but Wesley says they should see and goes to smash the Window. Angel begs Wesley to trust him, but Wesley says he can't any more and smashes the Window.

There are a series of flashbacks to what happened before Angel had everyone's memories altered, as Wesley remembers all he did in taking Connor in the first place, Angel trying to kill him in the hospital, having his throat cut, and the state Connor was in at the end.

When the flashbacks finish Wesley looks at Angel who looks very upset.

Connor's whole expression changes as Sahjan is holding him down and he easily knocks him away. Connor dives across the table grabbing an axe as he goes and beheads Sahjan.

Angel comes into the room not knowing how Connor will be. But Connor acts as he did before, the well-adjusted kid. He tells Angel he doesn't think this fighting thing is for him and he wants to go back to his parents.

Wesley's Office
Illyria asks Wesley if the memories of betraying Angel by stealing his son and having Angel try to kill him are memories he really wanted. He says, "At least I know what happened".
Illyria asks if he really does know what happened, as there are two sets of memories that are difficult to separate. Wesley tells her to hold on to the created memories as they were made for a reason. She asks if it was to hide the truth, but Wesley says it was to make the real memories more bearable.

Angel's Office
Angel is standing in front of the window looking out when Connor comes in. Connor says he thought sunlight would burn him up but Angel tells him it's special glass.

Connor tells Angel that his father wants a talk with him as he told him about Angel taking him demon hunting and nearly getting him killed. When Angel gets serious, Connor tells him to lighten up, he was only kidding. He actually told his parents he spent the night doing tests. Angel tells him they are looking for Vale, who disappeared during the battle, but Connor says he isn't worried about him. He says there's nothing Vale could tell him that he doesn't already know. Angel looks at him as he realises what Connor has said.

Connor tells Angel that his father is being released from the hospital section and they are going home. When Angel asks if he has to go right away, Connor says he thinks it's for the best. He says he's happier knowing Angel will be watching out for him, but he has to look after his parents as "this isn't their world and they don't feel safe here".
He says, "You've got to do what you can to protect your family." He looks straight at Angel and says, "I learned that from my Father". Then he leaves.

He walks to the lift and Angel walks to the office door as he realises Connor is referring to him. As the lift doors open, Connor looks back at Angel and gives him a small smile.

Rating and Comments:
This is a wonderful episode that brings closure to two loose ends in Angel's life, Sahjan and Connor.

It's wonderful to see Connor as the happy kid he should have been if he hadn't been stolen by Wesley and taken to Quortoth by Holtz.

This episode is a strange mix of humour and poignancy. We have some moments of wonderful humour, Angel's defensive answers to Connors questions, Illyria wanting Spike as a pet, Connor finding everything so cool. Angel's reaction when Connor tells him he's always been attracted to older women is priceless.

And then the poignant moments such as Angel's realisation that Connor knows who he really is and Connors obvious forgiveness and understanding of why Angel did what he did, whilst at the same time choosing to go to the life that was created for him. Also Wesley's feelings of betrayal when he finds out Angel changed everyone's memories and his own shock at discovering he was the betrayer originally who actually set off the chain of circumstances that led to Angel having to deal with the emotionally crumbling and suicidal Connor.

Origin is the perfect title for this episode as the origins to so many of the problems of what happened to Connor and the results of Angel's doing what he had to do to save his son are dealt with here. Connor is a happy kid, but without Angel changing his memories he would probably be dead. This was why the team took over Wolfram and Hart and is therefore the origin of all the problems, including Fred's death, that have happened since.

If we go back further, the reason for Connor being so off the rails was Wesley's betrayal of Angel when he took his son. Again, without this Angel wouldn't have had to change everyone's memories, as Connor would have grown up a well-adjusted kid with Angel and the team as his family.

And if we take a final step even further back we have Sahjan changing prophecies so that Wesley would believe 'The Father Will Kill the Son' and take Connor. The real reason being that Connor was the one prophesised to kill Sehjan. This begs the question; does this mean that prophecies will come true no matter what is done to change the outcome? Are everyone's paths mapped out so that they can't change their destinies no matter how they try? I suppose this is good for Angel or Spike as it means one of them will Shanshu as long as no other vampires turn up with souls.

So we have a couple of loose ends tied up with happy endings (definitely something to worry about considering Joss's hatred of the happy ending) and a spanner thrown into the works now that everyone knows what happened and that Angel changed their memories. How they will react to this will be worth seeing.
