Lineage

A Large empty warehouse
Wesley is sitting in a chair surrounded by thugs, while a guy sits at a table opposite him. Wesley says he had arranged to meet the distributor, not the muscle. He gets up to leave, but the man opposite him stops him saying his distributor is a cautious man who wants him to verify the merchandise. Fred walks over carrying a briefcase. She opens it and starts giving technical details about the gun inside. The guy wants to buy weapons, but Wesley says he's not going through middlemen. This upsets the guy but he knows of Wolfram & Hart's reputation. Just then one of the heavies is attacked and the guy thinks Wes has double-crossed him, but Wesley doesn't know anything about it. A battle ensues and ninja's attack both sides. Wes and Fred are the only ones left alive when Wes is attacked, but Angel crashes through a window and saves him. When Angel kills the ninja, there is a strange electrical sound as if it shorts out. Wesley goes to Fred and finds her lying on the ground, bleeding.

Angel's Office
Angel is furious with Wesley for putting Fred in danger. He tells Wesley he has to clear it with him before using any of `his` people again.

When Wesley leaves, Eve asks Angel why he's so hard on Wes. Angel says he can be careless. Eve asks if it's because he doesn't trust Wesley after he took Connor. Angel asks how she knows about that, but she goes on about understanding why he wouldn't trust Wesley, although Connor is happy now so maybe Wesley did the right thing after all.

Wesley's Office
Wesley is in his office when Fred comes in to tell him she's got the all clear although she has her arm in a sling. Wesley says he was just coming to see how she was and that it was his fault she was hurt. She gets angry and tells him he's nothing but a spoilt child. Wesley says "Father", which makes her more annoyed until she realises an older man, Wesley's father, is standing behind her. She introduces herself.

Wesley's father says he is there to discuss business. He tells Wesley that the remaining former Watchers (including himself) have decided to reform the Watchers Council. He is there to evaluate Wesley to see if he can be taken back. There has been contention over Wesley being included as his term as Watcher was the Councils most embarrassing moment. Wesley says he can't believe he beats being blown up and wiped out! Wesley tells his father he can save him time, as he's happy where he is. His father is upset that he would rather work for an evil law firm than clear his name with the council.

As Wesley and his father walk out Wesley walks into a woman carrying a bundle of files. Lorne appears and starts gushing over Wesley's father making Wes very embarrassed. Then Gunn arrives and introduces himself. He tells Wes that he's needed in the lab.

The Lab
Fred has been studying the being Angel killed. It's a cyborg. Angel wants Fred to keep working on the case until they have it sorted out.

Wesley arrives with his father who takes every chance he can to put Wes down. First he meets Spike who he recognises from when the Watchers came across him slaughtering an orphanage.

Angel steps forward and introduces himself holding out his hand. Wesley's father looks at Angel's hand with disgust and asks him if he really thinks he'll shake `that`. Angel tries to brush the insult off, and tells Wes's father that they are doing good work at Wolfram and Hart. Wesley's father says he keeps being told that.

Wesley steps in and asks if they can be of some use. Fred says they were going over the autopsy. Angel leaves telling Fred to keep him posted.

Fred tells Wes that they have found some symbols that they don't understand. She tells his father that Wesley is a genius at languages, and his father says they didn't make him Head Boy at the academy for nothing, although they had little choice that year.

Wesley starts to decipher the symbols. He thinks it could be a war chant or a binding spell. As he touches something there's a click. His father asks him what he's done and Wesley says he's armed a bomb.

Wesley tells them to evacuate the building. As everyone rushes out, Wesley takes Fred to the door, telling her to get as far away as possible. There is another click and they turn round to find Wesley's father has disarmed the bomb. He tells Wesley the symbols were a different language to the one Wesley thought it was and that it was simple to fix.

Angel's Office
Fred and Wesley are telling Angel what happened. Surprisingly, Angel isn't annoyed with Wesley. He asks where Wes's father is and Fred says that Lorne is keeping him occupied. She then realises this may not be such a good idea and goes to rescue him. When she leaves, Wes tells Angel that he can't think straight when his father is about. Angel tells him father and son relationships can be hell sometimes. Then he hands Wes a folder with information about the cyborg. It appears that similar creatures have been taking out the baddies all over the world. Wes leaves to do some research.

The Hallway
Wesley's father is telling Fred embarrassing stories about when Wesley was a boy. Wesley asks his father if he'll help with some research.

Wesley's office
Wesley uses a book on his desk to get a rare codex. His father asks what he did and when Wes tells him it gives him access to any book he wants, his father is annoyed, asking him why he has such a dangerous book just lying around. Wes says it's not easy to gain access to the building and that the important artefacts are locked away.

A lift
Spike and Eve are trapped in a lift when the power goes off.

The hallway
Angel tells someone to turn off the alarms, and when they go off he's pleased, but Gunn tells him that may not be a good sign, that it means they have lost security as well. Then they are attacked by more of the ninja cyborgs.

Wesley's Office
Wesley and his father are attacked by a ninja. Wesley kills it and his father says that it went straight for the books so they should put them somewhere safer. Wes tells him to take some of the books, while he takes the rest and goes to the vault. Inside, there are drawers containing artefacts. Wesley's father asks him what they should do next, and Wes is so surprised at being asked that he is off guard when his father hits him over the head. He then goes to one of the drawers and takes out an artefact. Speaking into an ear piece he says, "Phase one is complete".

Wolfram & Hart
Angel is fighting ninjas.

The Vault
Wesley wakes up and goes into his office. The ninja that attacked them is still there.

Wolfram & Hart
Wesley's father is walking along the corridor when he walks into Fred. He tells her that Wesley sent him to tell Angel about a time/space anomaly on the roof. Fred takes him to Angel.

Wesley's office
Wes realises that the ninja is still alive. He trips the bomb in it to make it tell him what's happening.

Wolfram & Hart
Angel and Gunn are still fighting. Gunn is grabbed around the neck by a ninja and Spike has to concentrate before he can hit it. They beat the cyborgs, then Fred arrives to tell Angel that Wes is on the roof and he needs Angel's help. Angel sends Gunn to find out what's going on in the rest of the building while he goes to the roof.

The Roof
Angel arrives on the roof looking for Wesley, but finds his father. When angel asks where Wes is, the father tells him that this was never about Wesley. He then uses the artefact he took from the vault to drain Angel of his willpower. The father tells Angel not to fight, as it'll be easier. He then speaks into a microphone and says, "Ready for extraction". As he does Wesley comes up behind him and takes the staff from him. The father turns and points a Gunn at Wes, but Wesley already has a gun on him. The father asks Wesley if he knows how dangerous Angel is. When Wesley asks if he ever thought to ask him about another way to get Angel to work for the Council his father says no because he's already been disappointed by Wesley. Wes then asks him if he's worried about him not being as good a Watcher as his father, or if he's more worried that he's better. When Wesley won't back down his father grabs Fred and Wesley shoots him several times. He then smashes the artefact, freeing Angel. We see his father lying on the ground and then he sparks with electricity as he shorts out. He's also a robot.

Wesley's Office
Angel asks Wes if he knows where these things came from. Angel thinks the perception is that he's weak, but Wes says it's him they see as weak, that's why they targeted him. Angel tells him he's not weak, he always makes the difficult decisions but Wes says he just feels like someone who killed his father. Angel tells him he didn't kill his father he killed a fancy robot. Angel then says that he killed his father when he became a vampire, but Wes doesn't think that's quite the same thing. Angel leaves.

Spike arrives and tells Wesley that he killed his mother, which Wesley doesn't want to know about.

Fred arrives and Wes says that if she's there to tell him how she killed her parents he'd rather not know. She tells him he didn't kill his father, but he says as far as he was concerned he did, and he did it because he was pointing a gun at her. As they talk Knox walks in to know if Fred wants a lift home. Wesley tells her to go then goes to his telephone and phones his Mother. He asks to speak to his father who then tells him off about phoning so early and doesn't want to hear what he has to say.

Rating and Comments:
This episode gives us a lot of insight into Wesley's relationship with his father. We've known for a long time that Wes was badly treated by his father, but this showed just how cold and uncaring a man his father was. It may have been a robot and not his real father, but the final scene shows us that his father is actually as bad as the robot. We don't actually know who sent the ninjas, but if the Watchers Council were reforming it would be possible for Wesley's Father to have organised this, not caring if his son survived it or not.

It's interesting to see the way Angel changes towards Wesley from the opening scenes where he's mad at him for putting Fred at risk, to being far more supportive when he sees the way his father treats him. Angel knows what it feels like to be a disappointment to his father, and he also understands the problems with the father/son relationship from his relationship with Connor.

This is an interesting episode about the father/son relationships, or even the parent/child relationship when you include Spike in the mix. It's also interesting to see the way Angel is dealing with his actions at the end of season 4. He makes comments that, on one level mean one thing to those that don't remember Connor, but to the viewer mean something completely different or has far greater depth.
