Life Of The Party

A corridor at Wolfram & Hart
Lorne is talking to several clients on various telephones as he walks down the hall to the tune of Don't Leave Me This Way (a disco classic) with his assistant. He's looking for Angel who gets back from a field trip where he was trying out a mystic grenade. It didn't work, so when Lorne tries to talk to him about the W&H Halloween party, Angel just wants a shower.

Lorne goes into his office and the music stops and it's all quiet. As he sits down in front of a vanity mirror looking exhausted, his reflection starts going on at him to get back out there and get on with the job. The reflection goes on so much that Lorne smashes the mirror. Things go quiet, then the reflection starts singing to him forcing him to get up and get going. He walks out his office door and the music starts up again and Lorne starts singing as he walks down the corridor.

Main
Angel's Apartment
Angel comes out of the shower as Eve walks in. He isn't pleased that she just walked into his apartment or that she had a key and he takes it from her. It turns out Angel had a meeting with her that he'd forgotten about.

A Lift
Eve asks how things are going. She says he needs a release because he bottles things up. He denies this then punches a man in a mask who is standing outside the lift as the doors open. Angel can't understand why it looks like they are having a party until Lorne points out they are having a party and he'd sent Angel lots of memos about it. Then Eve tells Angel their meeting was about the party.

Lorne wants to talk to Angel. A lot of people aren't coming because they are worried it might be a trap, but Angel says he's pleased they aren't coming. Lorne holds his head as though he's in pain, then snaps at Angel telling him they'll talk about the party in his office in 25 minutes when Angel has come out of his mood. Angel agrees.

The Lab
Wesley, Fred and her assistant are arguing about who was to blame for the grenade not working when Lorne walks in. Fred and Wesley say they aren't going to the party and Lorne gets upset that it's so hard to get people to have fun and tells them they are going to the party and isn't there someone else who can fix the grenade. Fred's assistant says he can do it, so Lorne says he'll see them in Angel's office in 15 minutes.

Gunn's office
Gunn is going through some papers when Lorne enters the room. He wants Gunn to help him talk Angel round to the party. Lorne tells Gunn that he is up and coming in the firm and as such he should mark out his territory. Gunn says fine, but he's busy, so Lorne says he'll see him in Angel's office in 10 minutes.

Angel's office
Everyone is sitting waiting for Lorne. Spike is complaining that no self-respecting creature of the night would be seen out at Halloween when Lorne walks in, still on the telephone.

Lorne says he needs to emphasise how important this party is, and Gunn agrees with him. Angel is worried that everyone coming to the party is evil and it's asking for trouble. Eve also points out that the staff needs a morale boost and Harmony tells him the employees are worried that Angel will axe them, literally. He says he's only killed a couple of them, but Lorne points out he's also killed a lot of the clients. Angel gives up, and the party goes ahead.

A limousine
Lorne and Angel are on their way to talk to an influential demon, the Archduke, as more clients will go to the party if he goes. Angel realises how important the party is to Lorne and because of that he'll do what Lorne wants.

The Arch Dukes place
Angel sits looking very uncomfortable as the Archduke talks to him saying he preferred the stories of Angelus. Angel plays along for Lorne's sake, and the Archduke agrees to go to the party. Lorne hurries Angel out before he can say anything wrong.

The Archduke's assistant goes to his boss and says he thinks the party is a trap. The Archduke says they are going but they will be properly dressed and he opens a sliding door to reveal a cache of weapons.

The Party
Harmony is the only one dancing. Two of the W&H employees are complaining about how lame the party is when Lorne comes over to them. They tell him it's their night off, but he just tells them to mingle and walks away leaving them looking at each other.

Lorne goes to Fred and Wes greeting them as wallflowers. He asks them to mix because his party is dying, but they say that isn't their thing. Lorne says the problem is they haven't had enough to drink, as they should be "three sheets to the wind already. Try to get into the spirit of things!"

Angel's Office
Lorne goes into Angel's office and tells him that everyone wants to meet the new boss. Angel says he has things to do then goes through a very lame list such as brooding. Lorne turns round and realises that Angel is actually watching ice hockey on television, and he gets annoyed that Angel isn't helping him. As he gets angrier he gets a pain in his head and Angel asks if everything is all right. Lorne recovers and gets Angel to go with him to mix with the party crowd.

The Party
Lorne points out various people at the party to Angel. Harmony is no longer the only one on the dance floor and the party is definitely more lively. Harmony wants Spike to dance with her, but he won't. She asks what he's doing there as Angel and Lorne come up to them. Spike says he doesn't know, as the party's already dead. Lorne tells him Angel's doing well, there's already a hundred people he hasn't killed, and it wouldn't hurt Spike to get more positive. Then the Archduke is announced. Lorne sends Angel to greet the Archduke and asks him to be nice. Angel goes over and is completely over the top, being so nice it comes across as false, before Lorne drags him away. The Archduke tells his assistant to be ready for Angel's trap, and if anyone interferes he's to kill everyone.

Fred and Wesley are now drunk. As they wander about Harmony warns them about standing in one place because someone has "peed over there".

Lorne and Gunn stand on a balcony looking over the dance floor. Gunn says things are going great and asks Lorne how he does it. Lorne tells him he had his sleep removed and suggests Gunn should do the same.

Eve and Angel are being really cutting with each other. Lorne walks over and says sarcastically, "You two? Really! The sexual tension. With a knife you could cut it. Get a room". They look after Lorne as he walks away.

Angel's Office
Eve and Angel charge through the door and start kissing passionately. Angel asks Eve if she wants to have some fun and she agrees.

The Toilets
The Archduke's assistant is in one of the cubicles when he hears a noise outside. He calls out, but something grabs him and kills him.

The Party
The party is in full swing, even Fred and Wesley are dancing. The two employees are leading people in a conga. Fred can barely stand she is so drunk. Wesley asks what she's drinking and she says nothing. When she asks what he's had to drink he says about a sixth of a bottle of beer. They realise something is wrong and they go over to Gunn who is standing with his back to them. When he turns round he pees over Wesley's shoes. Then Spike comes along going on about how great a party it is. Gunn asks him how long he's felt like that and Spike says since he spoke to Angel and Lorne. Just then Lorne walks past. The others grab him and drag him to Angel's office.

Angel's Office
Fred calls out to Angel as they all barge into the office and a naked Angel appears from behind the sofa, as does a naked Eve. Spike is pleased that "the big guy is getting some", while the others are shocked and want to know what he's doing with Eve. Wesley realises they are under a spell, doing things because Lorne told them to. Gunn realises that Lorne told him to mark out his territory, hence the peeing everywhere. Lorne denies doing anything, but then Gunn tells the others about Lorne having his sleep removed. Wesley realises that as an empath demon, Lorne is making people do things by suggestion, rather than reading what they do because of the lack of sleep.

Angel jumps up from his position on the sofa (and has to promptly cover himself with a large cushion), and tells Fred and Wesley to go and find Lorne's sleep and find a way of putting it back. Gunn gets sent to keep the people at the party happy (although Spike volunteers for this job as the `people person`), while Lorne has to keep out of trouble. Angel tells Eve to stay with him so they can have more sex!

A High Tech Storage Area
Wesley and Fred are looking for Lorne's sleep.

Angel's Office
The doors burst open and the Archduke enters with his entourage. They are all armed with poison darts. Spike is very impressed by their entrance.

Angel pops up from behind the sofa again. The Archduke is upset about the death of his assistant and blames Angel. The Archduke tells Angel to get dressed as he has a public execution to attend.

There are screams from the party and they all go outside to find another demon dead.

A High Tech Storage Area
Fred finds Lorne's sleep, while Wesley is doing research. He discovers that sleep deprivation in an empath is disastrous. An empath will write destinies rather than read them and if it goes on too long, his subconscious will manifest itself.

The Party
The Archduke goes to shoot Angel, but Lorne stops him telling him that somehow it's him doing these things. The Archduke tells him he'll kill him instead. Just then a huge, Hulk like version of Lorne roars and jumps over the balcony to the floor below.

The Lornehulk knocks one of the Archduke's people out of the way and Lorne tries to stop it, but just gets knocked to one side as well. As he lies there he says, "I must really hate myself!"

Angel tells the Archduke to run, but gets knocked to one side by the creature, quickly followed by Gunn.

Wesley and Fred come in to find the creature and Angel fighting, with Angel getting badly beaten. Fred points a type of pistol at the creature and Gunn shouts at her to shoot it, but she walks up to Lorne, puts the gun to his head and shoots him instead. He falls to the ground, but he says he's ok, he just needs to rest his eyes. The creature is about to stomp on Angel, when it shatters into blue dust and disappears, as Lorne falls fast asleep.

Angel's Office
Wesley covers Lorne up as he sleeps on the sofa. He tells Angel he thinks the creature was dealing with problems Lorne would normally process in his sleep.

Eve goes to leave, but Angel hurries after her. He says they should talk about what happened, but she says it's not the first time she's had sex under a mystical influence, after all she went to UC Santa Cruz, then she walks out. Wesley comes up behind Angel and asks how he's doing. Angel says he doesn't know.

Gunn tells Angel that the party was a big success, apparently the guests like a bit of blood shed with their parties. Angel tells Gunn the place is trying to change them and they mustn't forget that. Gunn says he'll see Angel later, but Angel mustn't sit in his chair until janitorial arrive! Spike thinks this is hilarious and Angel orders him out.

Angel goes over to Lorne who is talking in his sleep. He tells Lorne to sleep, but Lorne mumbles that it's hard to be the host of the party. Angel tells him to stop trying to be then leaves him to sleep. As Lorne doses off, we hear the beat of the disco music and he smiles in his sleep.

Rating and Comments:
The opening of this episode with Lorne walking along to the disco tune sets the scene for this whole episode, and it's wonderful! Any episode that is Lorne based is going to get my vote, but when you add in a naked Angel as well, I'm in a happy little world all of my own! There are too many gems in this episode to mention with some very funny scenes. Watch out for the scene where Angel and Eve are caught `in the act` and Eve slaps Angels behind!

Even with the light-hearted feel to this episode, there is a darker undercurrent. As Angel says, W&H is changing them, and they are volunteering for the changes themselves! Gunn has had the lawyer implant and Lorne had his sleep removed, two major things to let a firm, that not long before was their enemy, do to them. And they just aren't noticing how introverted and detached Angel is becoming. Everyone that he considered `family` now have their own things to do and have grown away from him, and without Cordy there is nobody to point this out to them. Even Lorne, who would normally have noticed what was going on, is being kept so busy that he felt he had to do without sleep to manage everything. None of them know what he is going through because they don't remember the whole Connor scenario, so he is becoming more and more depressed. And that can never end well!

I have to say I would have given this episode 10/10 if it wasn't for the Lornehulk, which was a bit of a letdown for me as I think the writers could have come up with something better as Lorne's alter ego. Having said that, that was one of the few faults I could find in this episode.
