The Girl In Question

Wolfram & Hart
Angel and Gunn are walking through the corridor. Gunn wants Angel to act on something, but Angel won't act without a full risk analysis. Angel decides to send Spike who refuses to go. It turns out Gunn wants the body of the head of a demon clan returned to his family so they can perform rituals to bring him back to life. Angel tells Spike to pack his bags, but Spike complains that he can't even speak Italian.

Angel answers the telephone and when he puts it down he tells the others "It's Buffy."

Wolfram & Hart
Angel comes out of his office saying he'll take care of things. The others ask him what's wrong and he tells them "It's the Immortal".
Spike takes this very seriously and they tell the others that the Immortal is the vilest evil. Spike asks Angel if they can beat him, and Angel wants to know what he means by we. Spike says they can save Buffy from the Immortal and get the body back while they are there.

The W&H Jet
Angel and Spike are squabbling on the plane. Angel tells Spike that they won't be able to save Buffy unless they work together. Spike asks Angel if his girlfriend knows he's travelling across the world to save another woman, but Angel says Nina isn't his girlfriend.

They decide they have to work together and Angel asks Spike if he wants a drink.

Angel realises they really can't get drunk on the miniatures in the plane's minibar. Spike blames it on vampire constitution, then he asks how Angel knew Buffy was in trouble. It turns out Angel has someone following Buffy.

Angel and Spike talk about the last time they dealt with the Immortal. Spike thinks back to the 1950's, but Angel says he wasn't in Italy then. Spike remembers and says it was 1894, the Room of Pain.

1894, The Room of Pain
Angelus and Spike are chained to the ceiling of a room. A lackey comes in and unchains them. He tells them that his boss, the Immortal, is sorry he had to detain them but their actions against his concerns merited punishment. They are to leave the city that night under penalty of death. Angelus breaks the lackey's neck and the two-remaining run away. They get dressed.

1894, Bedroom
Angelus and Spike find Darla lying virtually comatose naked on the bed.

Wolfram & Hart
Illyria is complaining about her reduced powers. She leaves and Wesley tells Lorne that Illyria is unpredictable at the moment because she is over compensating for her loss of powers.

Lorne looks past Wesley and says, "The Burkle's". Fred's parents have stopped off on their way to Hawaii to see Fred. They ask where she is and Wesley asks them to come into his office.

Illyria is watching and listening from the floor above.

Rome
Angel tells Spike to let him handle this as he knocks on a door. The door opens and Andrew is standing there. He tells them Buffy and Dawn let him crash there after that 'thing' happened. Spike asks what thing and Andrew says it was a cultural misunderstanding. He asks them to enter.

They both try to go through the door at the same time and Angel manages to push through first. Spike asks where Buffy is and Andrew tells them she's gone out with the Immortal. Angel tells Spike they're not too late, it could be worse, and Andrew agrees, saying they usually stay in and snuggle on the couch. Angel can't believe they are snuggling. Andrew realises they didn't know that Buffy and the Immortal are together. Spike says, "It's worse!"

1894, A Bedroom
Darla is lying on the bed as Angelus and Spike enter. Angelus thinks Darla has been attacked, then kisses her and realises it was the Immortal. Spike is furious that the Immortal had them imprisoned then violated Angelus' woman. Angelus asks if he hurt her and Darla says, "Not until I asked him to."
Angelus and Spike stand shocked as Darla gets up from the bed. She looks at them and says, "Oh come on. Have you seen him? With the eyes and the chest and the immortality."
Spike replies indignantly that they're immortal, but Darla says not like him, he's not some common vampire. She says she doesn't know what he is; he's a titan serving no master but his own considerable desires. Angelus is furious because he says the Immortal is his arch nemesis. Darla tells him it was just fornication, really great fornication. Spike tells Angelus that Darla is glowing and that he's been cuckolded. Then Drusilla opens an adjoining door, obviously in the same state as Darla and Spike goes mad. Darla tells him the Immortal is insatiable. Angelus says the Immortal had them thrown in jail so that he could violate their women in succession, but Darla points out it was concurrently. Angelus looks hurt as he says they never let them do that. Darla goes to Drusilla and says they should go and have a bath so the boys can "weep in private".

Angelus smashes a vase and then tells Spike he thinks it's time the Immortal found out who he was dealing with; it's time for blood vengeance.

Angelus and Spike are trying to get into a party but are being refused entry because they're not on the Immortals guest list. They are told if they're not on the list, they're not going into the party. They then make fools of themselves as they slink off arguing about the Immortal giving safe passage to some nuns that Angelus claims were his since "Everyone knows nuns are (his) thing". Angelus shouts that this isn't over.

An Office (Rome)
Spike says, "It's over. Just like that. Not that I thought I had a chance."
Angel says, "At least I have a girlfriend."
Then they start complaining about Buffy going out with the Immortal. They decide Buffy must be under some sort of spell and they're going to find him and break his wind.

A female demon enters the room with a bag that contains the Capo de Familia. They ask if he was small and the demon explains that when one of their kind gets old the head falls off like a ripe fig. The family perform some rituals and a new body is grown, but the rituals must be performed within a certain time after death.

Buffy's Flat
Andrew answers the door. Angel and Spike ask if Buffy's home yet, but Andrew tells them it's only 8.30. Angel asks if he knows where they went.

Wolfram & Hart
Fred's parents go into Wesley's office. Wesley is about to tell them about Fred when Fred walks in and makes a big fuss of them.

A Club (Rome)
Angel and Spike go to the bar and ask if the barmaid has seen a blond American girl. She says there are many about because it is the break from school. They say she's a friend in danger from the Immortal. The barmaid knows the Immortal and tells them they arrived a while ago. She points to a spot on the dance floor and they see blond hair swinging about to the music. Spike tells Angel to hold the fort and heads towards Buffy. Angel stops him saying he only wants to be the hero to get her back again. They then start quibbling over who had a relationship with her when they remember the bag containing the head that they've left lying on the bar. They go back, just in time to stop a demon that was at the office when they collected the head, from taking it. When they ask him where he thinks he's going, some big guys surround them and say, "Anywhere he wants".

Angel and Spike fight the big guys in slow motion to a song by Dean Martin. When they've finished with the big guys they start hitting each other. The music stops and goes back to the driving beat of the club as Angel asks Spike what he thinks he's doing. Spike says he was confused, the music's loud. Then they realise the demon has got away with the bag. They rush outside and find he's stolen their car. Spike grabs a scooter and tells Angel to get on the back. Angel doesn't want to until Spike points out the demon is getting away. They then have a chase through the streets on the scooter. Spike complains Angel is hanging on too tight, and then they crash and the car gets away.

They start arguing again, blaming each other for losing the head, and then Spike points out they only have twelve hours to get the head back to LA to stop the city becoming a demon battleground. Angel says they have to get the head and get back to LA.

A Club (Rome)
Angel and Spike are back in the club looking for Buffy again. The barmaid tells them they're gone. Spike complains the Immortal always does this, whenever he's around he loses his girl, gets beaten by an angry mob or arrested for tax evasion. When Angel looks at him he just says, "Long story".
Angel says they're different now. Spike says that if this were LA they'd have him hog-tied by now. Angel agrees saying they'd have their team, their resources…. Then Spike remembers Wolfram & Hart has an office in Rome.

Wolfram & Hart, Rome
Angel and Spike step out of a lift into an office identical to the LA branch.

A woman comes up to them and kisses them both before introducing herself as the CEO of Wolfram & Hart, Rome.

Fred's Lab
Fred and her parents are talking. Wesley is walking with Fred's mother and she asks him if he has a girl in his life yet. When Fred's father tries to stop her she says how can she when such a handsome man is so close to her single daughter.

Fred asks her father if he wants to see her office. As her parents go to her office, Wesley grabs her arm and holds her back. He asks her what she thinks she's doing and she tells him that she thought it would be easier than having to put up with their grief as well as his. Her parents come back and ask if everything's ok and they both say everything's fine.

Wolfram & Hart, Rome
The glamorous CEO tells them to make themselves at home. She tells them they are not to worry, as they no longer have a problem, she'll sort everything out for them. They tell her they have a friend who is with the Immortal and she says that she's lucky then. The CEO has had dealings with the Immortal and they always end very satisfactorily. They tell her their friend is under a spell, but she says the Immortal doesn't use magic, he considers it dirty.

She then tells them she has received a ransom note for the head. They must hurry as the drop off is in an hour. Angel says they need assault helicopters, cars etc, but the CEO says they don't need to do all that; this is a civilised country and people are always asking for ransoms. Someone asks for money, someone pays money, everyone's happy. Angel agrees to go along with it and asks who is making the drop off.

A Street in Rome
Angel and Spike are arguing about who has saved the world the most often. Angel says they're better than this, what does Buffy see in the Immortal. Then the demon that stole the head says, "Maybe she likes the cut off his trousers."

Wolfram & Hart, LA
The Burkle's say goodbye to Fred and Wesley. When they are gone, Wesley asks Illyria if she got what she wanted and she says she did. He tells her not to ever do it again.

A Street, Rome
The demon is telling Angel and Spike that they must be lonely, as their girlfriend has become the lover of the Immortal. He says that's unlucky for them, but lucky for her. The demon goes on about the Immortals book being a 'life changer'.

Angel and Spike get fed up and start fighting the heavies surrounding them. The demon tells them to stop or the head gets it. He asks for the money and they give it to him and they get the bag with the head. The demon leaves and they start to moan about the Immortal again. They go on about every time they come across the Immortal they end up getting screwed and holding the bag. Then they look in the bag and see a bomb, the timer on 4 seconds and counting down.

A Street, Rome
There are little fires all over the street and Angel and Spikes clothes are in shreds. Spike is complaining about his jacket being ruined. When Angel says he can't believe he's complaining about his jacket, Spike says Angel doesn't know what he went through to get it. Angel says he stripped it off the dead body of a slayer! Spike says it's his second skin, it's who he is.

Wolfram & Hart, Rome
The CEO is putting a new, identical jacket on Spike. She says she's glad Spike likes it because she's sent another ten home for him with a fine selection of shoes.

Angel walks in wearing the most awful red, white and black bomber jacket. The CEO goes on about it being the latest style, but Angel just looks really stupid.

She asks them what happened with the drop off, and when they tell her about the bomb she says that always happens to first timers, didn't she mention that. Then she turns them out of her office telling them she'll sort it all out. They suddenly find themselves locked out of her office and they can't get back in. Angel asks Spike if he wants to go home and they decide they can't wait to get there.

Buffy's Flat
Andrew answers the door in his dressing gown. He tells them they can wait if they want, but he's going out. Spike asks if Buffy has been acting off recently, but Andrew says that she's fine, she fell for the Immortal all on her own. Angel says she's not finished baking yet. He's supposed to wait until she's done and meanwhile the Immortal is eating cookie dough! Spike looks at him as if he's mad. Andrew calls through to ask if Angel's crying. Spike says, "no, not yet."
Andrew tells them they need to move on, Buffy has. If they don't they'll find she's gone, but if they do they may catch her one day. She loves both of them, but people change. Andrew walks out of his room in a tux as the doorbell goes and he opens it to two Italian girls then leaves with them. Angel and Spike decide they need to move on.

Wesley's Office
Wesley is sitting staring at the wall. Fred comes in and asks if he's mad at her. He tells Illyria to stop it, but she says she loves him, he loves her, what's the problem. She says he's in love with 'this' and she wants to explore it further. He tells her that will never happen because her looking like Fred sickens him. He tells her to change back and be anything, but don't be her, she'll never be her. He walks out and she changes back.

Wolfram & Hart
Angel and Spike step out of the lift. Angel tells Gunn to get everything ready for war; they didn't get the head. Gunn tells them the head is on his desk.

Angel's Office
The bag is on Angel's desk. It has a gift card on it saying, 'with regards. The Immortal.'

Spike says he hates that guy as Angel tears up the card. Angel says Buffy never had much taste in men, then looks at Spike and says case in point. Spike says Angel's the one who was living in alleys eating rats.

Spike asks Angel if they could lock Buffy in a box. Angel doesn't think she'd let them, so Spike suggests a spell, but Angel says she'd work it out. They decide they have to move on, and they both say that's what they are doing, as they both stay in exactly the same positions as they were in before.

Rating and Comments:
This has to be the worst episode ever made of Angel. It was very funny in places and very sad in places, but the two points didn't gel at all. The story of Fred/Illyria, Wesley and the Burkle's was a beautiful, heart-rending story, but because of the way it was interspersed with the Angel/Spike story it lost it's pathos.

On the other hand, the Angel/Spike story was just stupid. It was a very poor attempt at keeping all the fans happy. Buffy didn't choose between Angel and Spike, therefore the Angel/Buffy fans should be happy because she didn't pick Spike, and the Buffy/Spike fans should be happy she didn't pick Angel. Instead nobody was happy because it was a total copout.

The historical part of the story was an excuse to get Darla and Dru in an episode, normally a great thing, but it felt like they were shoe horned in it was so forced. And the petty bickering between Angel and Spike just got irritating. Add to that the stupid music that was used during the fight scenes and you have a dreadful episode.

It was fun seeing that the Rome office of Wolfram & Hart was a carbon copy of the LA branch, but with the Italian CEO who was great fun.

If this had been a normal episode in the series it would have been poor, but wasting the third last ever episode like this is unforgivable!
