Destiny

Royal London Hotel, England (1880)
Spike and Dru enter the room all over each other. Spike asks if this is her home and she says it's their home, indicating the bodies of a couple lying on a sofa. She says Angelus had them for dinner. Spike asks who Angelus is and then turns as he senses a figure behind him. It's Angelus.

Angelus and Darla have had a spat after she was called to the Master. Angelus says "Another rooster in the hen house" then grabs Spike and holds his hand in the beam of light coming through the window. He lets go of Spike and holds his own hand in the beam as he says he's been wondering what it would be like to share the kill with a man rather than a woman. Then Spike holds his own hand in the beam and Angelus laughs telling Dru he likes this one. Then he tells Spike their going to be the best of friends and they both laugh.

Wolfram & Hart
Angel wants Spike to leave him alone. Spike wants an office because everyone else gets to go home and he has to nest in someone else's roost. He asks for Wesley's office, since he's away, but Angel says he'll be back, then closes the door to his office.

Spike shouts after him that if Wesley is upset because he thought he'd killed his father, he wants to try killing his mother after she came on to him! When Harmony says, "That explains a lot," he says it was a long time ago.

Harmony holds up a parcel and tells him he's got mail. She opens it for him and there's a flash of light. Then her phone rings and when she answers it a shrill noise comes from it. Spike heads towards Angel's office but instead of walking through the door, he walks into it. He's solid again!

Angel opens the door to find Spike on the floor outside his office. Spike says he can feel and starts touching Angel who gets very annoyed. Gunn turns up and gets hugged before Spike kisses Harmony. Harmony tells Angel and Gunn that the phones and computers are playing up and nobody knows why. Then Spike grabs her hand and tells Angel he's taking his Girl Friday. When Harmony objects he tells her she's wearing a very pretty skirt and gives her a little grin. She melts and tells Angel she's taking a long lunch.

A Coach
Angelus and Spike are in a coach laughing about their last kill. They broke into a wedding and killed the priest, Angelus beat the groom to death with his own arm, then they took the bride with them. Angelus offers her to Spike but he says he'd rather find Drusilla, she's his destiny. Angelus stops the coach and lets Spike out to hunt, telling him to be back before sunrise.

Spike drags Harmony off to an office, ordering the guy in it to get out. He's not happy being ordered about by Spike and goes to another guy in the photocopier room and tells him what happened, but the guy turns round with blood coming from his eyes and starts beating the first guy up.

Wolfram & Hart
Angel is telling Gunn to find out what's wrong with the phones when Fred comes along. She tells them that the atmospheric gauges have gone so far into the red they blew up the instruments.

Angel gets annoyed that Spike has drunk all his blood and Gunn says he's off having a `nooner` with Harmony. Fred can't believe that they hadn't told her that Spike was corporeal again. Angel says they didn't think of it with all that was going on, then realises that it all started when Spike became corporeal.

Eve enters and tells them the corporate seers have told her that all the things that are happening are harbingers of doom. It's all because of the Shanshu prophecy, which has been thrown into chaos by there being two vampires with a soul. Whereas Angel was assumed to be the one in the prophecy, now that Spike is back after giving his life to save the world, there are two champions, and that's what's causing the problems.

Gunn leaves to check on something.

Fred accuses Eve of knowing this would happen all the time that she's been trying to recorporealise Spike. Eve says she would have said if she'd known, but she didn't. Then Eve asks how they brought Spike back and Angel tells her something came in the mail for him. Fred suggests it might have been the senior partners. Eve says she only knows what she's told, so Angel asks her what the phones are harbingers of. She says something serious and very dangerous.

An Office
Spike and harmony are on the desk and Spike tells Harmony not to talk and "spoil the moment". She bites him and we see blood coming from her eyes.

Harmony shoves Spike off her screaming she's not his. Then he sees her eyes. She then screams that he doesn't want her, he wants his slayer whore. Spike hits her and she flies over the desk.

The Photocopy Room
The photocopy guy is strapped to a trolley, shouting, while the other one is being covered with a sheet (obviously dead). Lorne is sitting on a chair telling Angel what happened with the two guys and how the mad one hit him. A security man comes in and tells Angel they've had two more attacks, one fatality. Angel gives instructions to seal the building.

Lorne says he's off to barricade himself in his office, but Angel asks him to stop off and ask Fred to let him know as soon as she's worked out what is happening.

Eve tells Angel that the fabric of reality is coming unstuck and it's all down to him and Spike. She tells them the town may not be big enough for the both of them. Spike says he's leaving then. Eve says by town she means earth and things will only get worse. Gunn steps out of an elevator and tells them not to let it get worse. He's been to the White Room and both the cat and White Room are gone so there's no link to the senior partners.

Angel asks Spike to stay until they work things out. Eve thinks they might be able to fix things if they could work out which one the prophecy is about. Angel says he read the prophecy and there's nothing there. They decide to go to Wesley's department to get help.

Wesley's Department
Sirq, the former Watcher, tells Angel he's read a translation of the text and he might as well have been reading a child's book report. Angel asks if there's anything that will help them find out what's going on. Sirq says there's a new translation about the root being split and the balance being off until the vampire with a soul drinks from the cup of perpetual torment. He will either save or destroy the world and his past will be washed clean. Angel and Spike start arguing about who will drink from the cup, but Sirq says that is predestined. Only the right one will drink from the cup. Angel asks if the prophecy tells where the cup is. Sirq gives some vague ideas, which Angel recognises. He says he'll go and get the cup, but then realises Spike is gone.

Angel's Red Viper
Spike has taken one of Angel's cars and is speeding across the desert. The cell phone goes off and it's Angel complaining about the car being taken. They argue about whom the prophecy is about as Angel also speeds across the desert in a 4x4.

Gunn's Office
Gunn tells Eve she's always around when the trouble starts and she's not as innocent as she pretends.

The Desert
Angel arrives after Spike. Spike says, "here we are then, the two vampire heroes. Competing to whet our whistles with some light, refreshing torment."
Angel asks if Spike thinks he's a hero and Spike says he saved the world. Angel tells Spike to talk to him when he's saved the world a couple more times.

Royal London Hotel, England
Spike walks in on Angelus who is with a woman. He thinks it's the bride but it's Dru. Dru asks if William missed her and Angelus says, "I'm sure he did. After all you are his destiny", and then Dru and Angelus laugh at Spike.

The Desert
Spike and Angel find the cup a golden goblet. Angel asks what they do now and Spike hits him. Angel tells Spike they don't have time for this, but Spike says Angel won't last that long. They fight, and then Spike tells Angel that he had a soul forced on him as a curse, whereas Spike fought for his soul through the demon trials. He says he did it because it was the right thing to do. His destiny. Angel says he heard it was to get into a girls pants! Then they start fighting again.

Fred's Lab
The cases of madness are increasing and there is no pattern to them. Then Gunn asks Fred why she's talking to Eve, and as he looks up he has blood coming from his eyes. He grabs Eve and starts choking her, but Fred hits him and knocks him out.

The Desert
Spike and Angel are fighting but Spike is getting the upper hand. Angel calls him Willie and we go back to the past.

Royal London Hotel, England
Spike hits Angelus, telling him to leave Dru alone, she's his. But Angelus easily beats him and tells him that the way things work is that as a vampire Spike can do anything, have anything, but nothing belongs to him, not even Dru. Spike says Angelus is wrong, he and Dru are forever. Angelus goes to Dru and tells Spike if he wants her he should come and get her. Spike flies at him.

The Desert
Angel is now winning the fight. Spike tells him that the reason Angel hates him is because every time he sees Spike it reminds him of all the evil things he's done. Spike says that Dru sired him, but Angel made him because he wanted something as disgusting as he was. Spike hits Angel with a large cross and tells him to take a long look because he is nothing like Angel. Angel agrees, saying Spike is less and that's why Buffy didn't love him, because he wasn't Angel. Spike grabs Angel and says that Buffy must have been thinking about Angel all those times he was "putting it to her". Angel grabs his wrists and easily pulls Spikes hands off his lapels.

Angel sends Spike flying, but Spike comes back and tries to stake him, putting the stake through Angel's arm. Angel pulls it out and vamps out saying "All right. Let's finish this" as Spike also goes vamp. They attack each other.

Fred's Lab
Fred gives Eve a glass of water telling her to take small sips because her throat will hurt for a while. Eve tells her she doesn't have to be nice to her, she knows what they all think of her. Then as she walks out she tells Fred "I'm not the bad guy."

The Desert
The fight continues until Spike beats Angel and stakes him in the shoulder. He says he probably should have dusted him, but he wouldn't want to hear `her` bitch about it.

Spike goes to the goblet and takes it. Angel stops him asking him if this is really what he wants or is it just that he wants to take something away from Angel. Spike says it's a bit of both and drinks from the goblet. He tells Angel its mountain dew.

Fred's Lab
A very badly beaten Angel walks in. Fred asks him what happened and he says he fell down some stairs. He asks about Gunn, but Fred says she can't find a cure and things are getting worse. She asks about the cup and he tells her it was a fake. Then an equally badly beaten Spike walks in and Fred says, "Stairs, huh?"
Spike tells them that Sirq has cleared out his office and gone. Angel says the cup was a fake but the madness is real, so what are they going to do about it. Then Gunn says, "you could untie the brother".

Angel's Office
Eve tells them that the senior partners temporarily fixed the rift. They had been working on things from the start. Then she leaves.

Spike asks Gunn if he wants to go for a drink, but Gunn isn't feeling up to it.

Angel tells Gunn that Spike beat him for the first time. Angel says Spike was stronger and wanted the cup more. Gunn says it doesn't mean anything, but Angel says it does, it means he's not the one.

An Apartment
Eve walks in and starts talking to someone. As she undresses she tells them everything that happened. That Sirq vanished as planned and that Spike didn't stake Angel, but they beat each other to a pulp. Then she gets into bed next to the man she's talking to and we see it's Lindsey, covered in tattoos of mystic symbols.

Rating and Comments:
This is an episode that could be wonderful, but is spoilt for me by a couple of things. I didn't like the way Spike was made corporeal. It was far too simplistic and I expect more from such good writers. It was sort of poof, you're solid again! I think they could have found a far more credible method of returning him to his former self.

Spike beating Angel in the fight didn't work for me either, as Angel has always been able to easily defeat Spike. The only times Spike has beaten Angel have been through the intervention of someone else, never on his own. So for him to end up in a position to stake Angel in a straight fight doesn't seem very true to character, even though Angel comments on it.

I also found a bit of a jump between Spike drinking from the goblet and then us finding out it was a fake. Spike said the contents tasted of mountain dew, but this didn't really signify to me that it wasn't the real thing. So I found it a bit of a shock when angel announced it was a fake back at the office. It just felt like there was something missing between the two scenarios.

However, the episode has left a huge number of questions. Is anything Eve has said about the prophecy true? Were all the problems caused by a rift because of there being two vampires with souls? What is Eve up to and is that really Lindsey?

And that's apart from the whole how is Angel going to pull himself out of this depression? He has generally been working towards atoning for all the evil deeds he did as Angelus, but what has he got to work for now? He's lost Cordy. He's lost Connor. His `family` isn't as close because they all have their own departments to keep them busy. And he seems to be sinking more and more into a state of depression as the series goes on, and none of them seem to notice. Maybe speaking to Gunn will set some alarm bells ringing with the others, but we'll have to see.

So far in this season there seems to be very few clues to the direction that the series is taking, so I for one am going to just sit back and enjoy the ride!
