Damage

A Psychiatric Hospital
A doctor comes in and speaks to the nurse on duty. Another nurse comes along to call him for a patient who has collapsed. The patient has been given the wrong medication, which means another patient hasn't had her sedative.

The doctor rushes to the other patient's room just as she knocks the door off its hinges. The doctor tries to calm the patient, Dana, down and manages to get behind the wire gates, but she pulls them off their hinges and attacks the nurses, then grabs a medical saw and kills them with it.

Wolfram & Hart
Gunn is talking on the telephone. He tells Fred he thinks they did the right thing moving to Wolfram & Hart.

Angel's Office
Angel doesn't think they did the right thing moving to Wolfram & Hart. He is talking to the others about Eve who has disappeared. Gunn and Fred walk in and Wesley fills them in on what the others were talking about. Gunn tells them that the parasite Eve allegedly put on Angel wasn't meant to kill him. Fred says she just meant to put him in an hallucinogenic coma. Gunn points out that to be the go between for the senior partners she must have some serious power so they have to be careful. Angel agrees and Gunn says they should just watch out for her at the moment.

Harmony comes in to tell Angel that a girl broke out of the hospital and that it seems to be a case of possession. Angel says he'll go as he's dealt with possessions before and it needs to be dealt with with finesse.

The Hospital
Angel steps out of one lift at the hospital just as Spike steps out of the next one. They go to the doctor who tells them about Dana. Spike immediately says it's demon possession and the doctor says that’s stupid. Spike leaves to catch the demon leaving Angel to apologise for him saying, "Is pathological idiot an actual condition?"
The doctor tells Angel to stop him or he'll be killed, but Angel just says Spike will just come back anyway. The doctor tells Angel that Dana is a special case, her parents were murdered and she was kidnapped and tortured as a child. She was found naked and covered in blood a long time later wandering the streets. Whatever happened to her is what drove her mad.

The doctor leaves and Angel asks the nurse what he's not being told. She takes Angel to a room where the doctor has tapes of every interview he did with Dana.

A Shop
Dana is taking food off the shelf and eating it. One of the assistants comes over to her and tells her that she has to take the items to the checkout and pay for them. She turns and breaks his arm before picking up the saw and walking away. She goes to the clothes section and picks up some of the clothes. As she does she has a flashback to when she was a child. A security guard comes along with his gun drawn and tells her not to move or he'll have to shoot her.

A Shop
Dana is now dressed in ordinary clothes and walks out of the shop.

The Hospital
Angel is watching the tapes of Dana's interviews. He asks the nurse if all the tapes here are of Dana. She says they are and that they are all the same. Dana is screaming and talking in different languages. Angel asks the nurse if she's the one who tipped them off about Dana. She says she is, she has a cousin working at Wolfram & Hart who's told her about the changes going on there and she was hoping that she might get a foot in the door if she helped them. As she's talking, Angel is distracted by something Dana says on the tape. He recognises what she's saying.

The Shop
Spike is lurking outside the shop as sirens and police lights flash all round him. He follows the scent of blood.

Angel's Car
Angel telephones Wesley and tells him that they're not dealing with a possession.

A Warehouse
Spike has found Dana and he wants to talk to her about mistreating little girls, demon to demon, then he vamps out.

Angel's Car
Dana was speaking in Rumanian and Angel knew what she was saying. She's a Vampire Slayer.

A Warehouse
Spike asks Dana what she's grinning about, but she attacks him. She gets a piece of wood and tries to stake him. She's shouting at him in Chinese, but he doesn't understand. He manages to break away and the fight continues until she throws Spike out of the window.

As Spike lies on the ground, Angel drives up. He tells Spike that tactical is on the way but Spike just says he can manage. It's some sort of Chinese demon or water spirit. When Angel just looks at him and walks away he asks, "What?"

Wolfram & Hart
Spike can't believe that Dana is a psychotic slayer. Angel tells Spike that Wes contacted Rupert Giles who is sending his top man to deal with things. They walk into Angel's office to find Andrew sitting there. He is thrilled to see Spike and hugs him. "You're like Gandalph the White resurrected from the pit of the Balrog, but more beautiful than ever."

Angel asks if they know each other. Andrew says they saved the world together, although Buffy helped. Wesley says they were just about to fill everyone in on the legend of the slayer. Andrew says it's best to let an expert do it and tells them about the origins of the slayer, much to everyone's amusement. Angel tells him they actually know everything he tells them. Lorne asks why Dana is a slayer if there's only one slayer in every generation. Andrew tells them about the Sunnydale surprise when Willow released the power of the slayer to all the potential slayers of the world. Wesley thinks it's a great strategy, but who will train the slayers with the Watchers Council destroyed. Andrew says Giles and a few key Sunnydale alumni are training the slayers. But Dana is an anomaly that nobody could have foreseen, after being mistreated, tortured etc. Angel realises that the slayer dreams Dana has been having seem real to her because of her instability. Spike decides he's going to find her but Angel tries to stop him saying that they are the last people who should be looking for her. Spike says what are they supposed to do, go boohoo because she was driven out of her gourd; it's not like they haven't done worse in the day.

A Dock
Dana is having flashbacks to when she was tortured. A man comes up to her and asks if she needs help.

Angel's Office
Angel asks the others if they think Spike was right, but Fred wants to know what they are going to do when they catch her. She says they can't kill Dana because her condition isn't her fault. Angel suggests they bring Andrew in to see if he knows 'anything', but Fred says he's not there. Angel asks where he is.

The Docks
Spike is walking along. He knows he's being followed. He grabs Andrew and drags him from the shadows. Andrew is telling Spike about his training when he trips over the body of the man who spoke to Dana and screams.

Dana's Childhood Home
Lorne has brought in a mystic to read the house where Dana was kidnapped and her parents were killed. He 'sees' what happened to her there and he knows that she was kept in a basement that smells of molasses.

A Warehouse
Dana has found her way to the warehouse were she was kept and tortured. She pulls open a grating and takes out a box full of needles. She looks round as Spike takes one of the needles and says, "let's try the blue one now".

The Docks
Andrew is telling Spike where everyone is. Willow and Kennedy are in Brazil, Xander is in Africa and Buffy and Dawn are in Rome. Andrew realises Buffy didn't know Spike was back and asks if Spike wants him to tell Buffy he's alive.

A Rooftop
Dana watches as Spike and Andrew walk along, talking.

Wolfram & Hart
Gunn asks Angel and Lorne how things went. Angel says he wants to find the guy who took Dana, that they are to raise the dead if they have to to find out. Lorne goes to see if he can find out where she was kept.

The Docks
Dana attacks Spike and Andrew. Andrew is knocked out and Spike follows her to the warehouse where she was tortured. Spike tells her he can follow her and she says, "no escaping". Dana keeps repeating "heart and head. Cut off the head and stab the heart". Then she begs Spike to let her get home to her son. Spike realises she's talking about Nicky Woods, the slayer he killed in New York. Dana lunges at him and stabs him in the neck with one of the needles. This weakens Spike and she drags him to a pillar where she chains him up. Dana gives him another injection that knocks him out and says he can't hurt her any more.

Angel's Office
Angel and co are trying to work out where Dana was kept. They know that she has attacked people in one area so they are trying to find somewhere that smells of molasses in that area. Wesley is about to suggest a molasses factory when Fred suggests whiskey. Lorne is all for this as he was about to suggest it himself, but Fred says that when you cook up whiskey the whole place smells of molasses. Angel tells them to look for a distillery. Just then Andrew bursts in to say they were attacked and he thinks Dana got Spike.

The Warehouse
Spike comes round to find Dana standing over him. She says he can't touch her any more and goes on about losing yourself piece by piece. He asks her what she's done and holds his hands up, but he only has stumps. She's cut both his hands off.

Spike starts to lose consciousness again, but she hits him to keep him awake. She tells him he can't hurt her any more, but he says he never hurt her, he hurt others but not her. She's mixing up the man who tortured her with the slayers Spike killed. Dana tells him he killed the others so it doesn't matter. She then starts repeating heart and head again. Just as she's about to kill Spike, Angel knocks her away from him. He tells her that the man who hurt her was shot by police five years before robbing a liquor store. She says he can't hurt her any more and attacks Angel. They fight and Angel grabs her and holds her while Wesley shoots her with a tranquilliser dart.

The Docks
Angel tells the team to load her up and chain her in the van. Just then Andrew steps out from behind the van and says he'll take it from there. Angel says he's not handing her over to him, but then 12 girls step out behind Andrew. Andrew says he has 12 slayers, none of whom have dated Angel and he's taking Dana. Angel says he's not letting them take her and he'll just clear it with Buffy, but Andrew asks him where he thinks the orders came from. He tells Angel that none of them trust him and they're not on the same side any more, Angel works for Wolfram & Hart. Angel lets Andrew take Dana and Wesley asks if he's done the right thing. Angel says they can handle her and as Andrew said, they have enough problems of their own.

A Hospital Room
Spike is sitting up in his hospital bed with his hands reattached when Angel comes to see how he's doing. Angel asks if he's in a lot of pain, and Spike says more than he'd like but not as much as he deserves. He says Dana thought he killed her family, so is he supposed to complain because hers wasn't one of the hundreds he did kill. He says he isn't saying that Angel's right, "because I'm physically incapable of saying that".

Spike says he was in it for the party, he was never interested in the bodies, but Angel tells him he couldn't take his eyes off the bodies, he was in it for the evil, it was everything to him. He'd have considered Dana a masterpiece. Spike asks what happened to her and Angel tells him Andrew took her. Spike thinks she's too far-gone to help, that she's a monster. Angel says, "She's an innocent victim", but Spike says, "So were we, once upon a time".

Rating and Comments:
This is a very good look at what is good and what is evil. Dana could be seen as evil because of what she does to Spike, but she is a victim of what has happened to her in her past, just as Spike and Angel are. Angel, and now Spike, feel the guilt of the evil they did in the days before they had a soul, but they wouldn't have done those things had they not been killed and turned into vampires in the first place. There is no question that they are seen as evil as vampires, but if Dana can be excused because of the torture she underwent, it could be argued that the same should go for them.

I really don't see how Andrew and the Sunnydale alumni are going to be able to control a rogue slayer, they could never deal with Faith and she wasn't insane. They won't have the finances or the facilities to keep her safe, or rather keep everyone else safe from her, let alone treat her for her mental illness. If she had been left with Angel he could have seen that she did receive treatment and was secure while she received it.

I wasn't happy with Andrew's treatment of Angel at the end of the episode either. He basically used Angel to catch the rogue slayer, something he couldn't manage. Once Angel had her he just came along and took her, hurting Angel in a way that he could never do physically by telling him that 'they', and more importantly to Angel, Buffy, didn't trust him and considered him to be on the 'other side' now that he was running Wolfram & Hart. I wasn't sure if this was what the Sunnydale crew actually thinks, or if this was just Andrew's take on things.

This is a very dark episode, lightened mainly by Andrew's comic remarks, some of which are absolute gems. It is summed up in the talk Spike and Angel have at the end of the episode, when both sound wistful for the days when they were more innocent people.
