Angelus, "She's here to seriously mess up your bosses plans."

Angelus, "Ain't that the truth." Angelus stabs the Beast in the back and kills him.

Angelus, "I guess we'll just have to take a rain check on that whole eviscerating you thing."

Cordelia, "I don't know how…"
Connor, "What?"
Cordelia, "We're having a baby."

Wesley's apartment
Wesley and Faith arrive at his apartment. Faith is badly beaten and bleeding. Wesley gets a cloth for her face and says he'll get bandages. He is concerned about her, but she just wants to use the shower.

She goes to the bathroom and as she undresses her terrible injuries are visible. She stands under the shower, then suddenly hits the tile wall, smashing a hole in it and screaming.

A Bar
A female vampire sends a drink over to a table. It's for Angelus who is sitting with a group of vampires and boasting about getting the slayer beaten and killing the Beast. A demon sitting nearby says, "Yeah soul boy, nice job bringing the sun back."
An unhappy Angelus goes over to the demon and threatens to rip out his windpipe, but as he grabs the demon by the throat, Angelus hears a deep voice greeting him and saying it's about time they had a talk.

Opening credits

Main
The Bar
Angelus is walking round the bar talking to the voice. He's not happy because he can't find the speaker, but to everyone else there it looks like he's talking to himself. The voice scolds him for killing the Beast, then says it's had its eyes on Angelus for a long time. Angelus wants to meet the voice and, as it replies that they will, we see that Cordelia, her eyes white, is the one speaking. Angelus says that the voice brought earthquakes, rain of fire and blotted out the sun, all to manoeuvre the gang into releasing him. Cordelia replies, sitting on her bed with a glowing mist in her hand that she seems to be using to speak to Angelus, that he is arrogant and the world doesn't revolve around him. He realises that it was the owner of the voice that made the gang think it was their idea to take Angels soul and then steal it. Cordelia says she couldn't risk the team putting his soul back as she has big plans for him. He replies he makes his own plans and the voice gets annoyed that he would dare to defy it, but Angelus doesn't see why he should be sacred of a voice.

Cordelia's room
Connor comes in and Cordelia has to quickly hide what she's doing which means cutting off the link to Angelus. Connor is concerned that she's not feeling well, but she points out it could either be being shot or the baby.

The Bar
Angelus is still talking to the voice, then realises it's gone when there's no reply.

Cordelia's room
Cordelia and Connor are lying on her bed. Cordelia asks if Faith is all right and Connor says she's pretty beat up, but she's a slayer. When he asks if that makes her pretty strong, Cordelia tells him 'for a human'. She can't believe Angelus killed the Beast, and says that maybe that means they did the right thing bringing him back. Connor is annoyed that she thinks Angelus is a hero, but Cordelia tells him that Angelus can't fight his nature and by killing the Beast he's made the world safer for their family. Connor says he won't let anyone hurt her or the baby, but Cordelia tells him to keep the pregnancy a secret. Connor thinks she's embarrassed of him, but she says the baby is growing so quickly the others might get scared and try to kill the baby like they tried to kill him. Then she says, "it won't be too long before they all know what's growing inside of me".

The Hotel Foyer
Fred, Gunn and Lorne are getting armed with tranquilliser pistols. Lorne isn't happy "Did I mention that the only shots I'm good at involve tequila?"
Gunn tells the others that they have to be prepared in case Angelus makes a return performance, even though the sanctuary spell should hold. "If he shows a fang in here, thwack him where it hurts."
"Yeah, goodnight, not so sweet prince."
Then Fred spins round raising the gun, but it's only Connor. Gunn asks how Cordelia is but Connor gets all fidgety and says she's tired and wants some soup. As Lorne puts it, "Odd bird. And getting birdier."
Fred wonders if Connor and Cordelia are still together, but Lorne says although they may be, he doesn't get any 'warm and fuzzies' from them. Fred thinks it may be because Faith sent him home, but Lorne points out that having Faith there is the only way they could get Angel back in anything other than a dustpan. Fred points out that Faith was badly beaten by the Beast, so what happens if she's not up to getting Angel back.

Wesley's apartment
Faith wants to go on the hunt again, but Wesley isn't sure she's ready. She picks up the bag containing weapons and says "5 by 5 boss" then leaves.

The Hotel office
Fred is talking to herself as she looks for a translation book and moves some of her papers so that they cover her pistol. As she's looking at one of the books a voice says, "Talking to yourself Fred? There's a lot of that going round".
It's Angelus standing in the doorway. She tells him he can't hurt her because of the spell. Angelus says he thought they'd do that so he picked up something, and holds up a talisman. He wants to know what she knows about the Beast. When she says she doesn't know anything and wouldn't tell him anyway, he takes all her books and papers. She tells him what she does know is that he's out of his league and if he's going to kill her, to get it over with. Then she sees the back of the talisman and it says 'made in China'. She hits him with a glass jug, grabs the gun and fires a dart at him, but he dodges and runs out. Lorne, who is going to check on the noise almost runs into Angelus, but then gets shot by accident with one of the darts. Angelus jumps up onto the balcony and stops the next dart Fred fires, with one of the books. When Fred fires the gun again it's empty and Angelus laughs. Connor, who's running down the corridor, goes to hit Angelus and gets thrown over the balcony by the blast from the sanctuary spell. As Fred runs to the unconscious Connor, Angelus looks down at him and says, "Well, isn't that interesting".

Angelus jumps down from the balcony and says, "Just think how close you came to stopping me when I'm slaughtering all your friends. Toddles" then leaves.

Fred checks on Lorne.

Outside the Hotel
Wesley and Faith enter the garden. Faith tells Wesley they'll track and find Angelus, but just then he comes out of the hotel. They fight and Angelus grabs Wesley by the throat. He wants to know if Faith can get to him before he kills Wesley. Faith doesn't know what to do, but Wesley tells her to 'do it'. Angelus goads her and then Gunn rushes out of the hotel and throws Faith a tranquilliser gun. He shoots at Angelus but Angelus throws Wesley at him and jumps over the fence. Faith shoots at him but misses and he gets away.

Cordelia's room
Connor rushes in. Cordelia is in the bathroom suffering from morning sickness. Connor tells her that Angelus had been there and took all the books and papers they had on the Beast. He tells her about the fight and she comments that the sanctuary spell held up. Connor says it worked but doesn't tell her it also affected him.

The Hotel foyer
Lorne is asleep on a sofa. Gunn has been getting organised in case Angelus comes back. Fred blames herself for him getting the book but Gunn says she isn't to blame. She, however thinks the others will blame her as they wouldn't have fallen for the talisman. Gunn is just glad she's safe and she's just about to ask him something about them when Wesley cocks a shotgun and interrupts them. Faith didn't think they were going to kill Angelus, but Wesley says they're not going to, but he'll be ready to slow him down if he has to. Gunn asks if Wesley wants him to go with them but Wesley says he needs someone he can trust, and who can hurt Angelus, to stay at the hotel in case he returns. Faith and Wesley leave.

The hotel garden
Faith is all business. She is about to tell Wesley what they'll do if Angelus is still in the area, when Wesley says he thinks she'll let him go again. She's not impressed. She says he would have been dead now if she had done anything to Angelus, but Wesley asks how many people will die because she let him being a hostage make a difference. He tells her Angelus is an animal and the only way to defeat him is to be just as vicious as he is.

An Occult Bookshop
Angelus is sitting in a leather armchair reading the papers he took from Fred. The shop owner is on the floor. He can't work out what the papers say. He goes over to the bookseller and stabs him with his hand. He wants to know about the Beast and thinks that it's the bookseller's job to help him. When the bookseller says he doesn't know anything, Angelus starts to beat him until the voice of the Beasts master starts speaking inside his head. The voice isn't happy with him but Angelus isn't impressed, and when he sees the bookseller has escaped he gets even more annoyed. The voice wants to be friends with Angelus but he disagrees because he's evil and therefore doesn't have friends and if he did they wouldn't be living inside his head. The voice replies, "Like you're forced to live inside Angels? Because you're the voice in there aren't you? Just beneath the surface, buried under all that goodness. Fully conscious. Fully aware. But trapped. Unable to move or speak. Powerless to act on your desires. So thirsty. So helpless. It must be agony"
This hits a nerve with Angelus and he goes to leave but the voice asks him if he'd like a game of show and tell. Who has his soul? And the jar with his soul appears on a table. Angelus goes to grab it but his hands go through it and the voice says it has it. Angelus says it's more smoke and mirrors and the voice agrees, but says that if Angelus doesn't behave his soul will be restored. He'll be put back in his box so deep he'll never get out again. Angelus doesn't like this at all and asks what the voice wants.

Cordelia's bedroom
Cordelia is sitting on the bed with the jar with Angel's soul in her hands.

The Hotel reception
Gunn is preparing a dart gun for Fred. She asks if he thinks Angelus will come back. She's still blaming herself for him getting away, but Gunn tries to convince her she did nothing wrong. He says if she thinks she did do something wrong then she just shouldn't do it again, it's that simple. She asks if that's true and he turns away, but she stops him. She tells him she knows she was wrong with Wesley but she just wants to go back, then they kiss. When they part Gunn looks uncomfortable and says he should do a sweep of the hotel. He picks up his gun and slowly leaves.

A Bar
Faith is beating up the demon Angel spoke to earlier. A vampire gets up to help him but Wesley brings up his shotgun and stops him. The demon asks what they want and Wesley tells him they want to know where Angelus is. The demon says he doesn't know and wouldn't tell someone who's about to get killed anyway. Just then Wesley shoots the demon that's creeping up behind him. Wesley then points the gun at the demon who becomes eager to talk but doesn't know anything. He tells them about Angelus being there earlier and talking to himself, then slipping into the back. Wesley and Faith go to look and find a female addict lying on a bed. Then they're attacked by a vampire, which they quickly dust.

The bathroom of Cordelia's room
Connor is making faces in the mirror trying to see what he'd look like if he could vamp out. Cordelia works out that he was beaten by the sanctuary spell. When he says he's not a demon she says she is. He tells her he doesn't know what he is, but she says she knows, he's a daddy and his only worry should be to keep them safe. Then she sends him downstairs to see what's going on.

The back room of the bar
Faith asks what the vampires did to the girl but Wesley says she did it to herself. The girls shoot up and the vampires feed on them and both of them get high. Faith asks the girl about Angelus but she says she doesn't know anything, so Faith hits her. She still doesn't know anything. Faith leaves her alone but Wesley stabs the girl in the shoulder and makes her talk. Faith goes mad about what he did, but he tells her he remembers when she didn't mind a bit of torture. She says that's not her anymore but he keeps on at her about the time she tortured him, until she hits him. Then he tells her it wasn't that difficult to goad her and that she'd need that to beat Angelus, to do what she has to do. Faith tells him she can't risk killing Angelus, there has to be another way.

The hotel foyer
Lorne is waking up after being tranquillised. Fred and Gunn are standing beside him. Fred apologises but Lorne tells her not to worry. They tell him that Angelus took everything they had on the Beast. Lorne recognises the talisman and tells them a demon called Mori sells them. Gunn tells Connor to call Wesley.

A church being renovated
Wesley and Faith are looking for Mori to see if he knows where Angelus is hiding. They find Mori dead, and then Angelus appears behind them. He says a little birdie in his head told him that they'd be there. They fight and Angelus knocks Wesley out, gets his shotgun and tries to shoot Faith. He has her on the floor with the gun pointed at her and he asks her if she still wants to die like the time she tried to get Angel to kill her. She says she doesn't and he says too bad because she is going to, then he empties the cartridges out of the gun and says but not like this, then starts to beat her. They fight again and Faith gains the upper hand but Angelus jumps into the rafters. He starts to taunt her saying he knew she was in there and that he knows what it's like to be forced to be someone you're not. He says there's only one way to make the pain stop and that's to hurt someone else and he appears behind her. They fight again, this time both jumping among the rafters and scaffolding. Angelus gets the upper hand until he tells her she's a murderer, an animal and she enjoys it, just like him. Then she beats him to the ground and tells him he's wrong, she's not like him. He sweeps her feet out from under her, grabs her from behind and says "Don't worry, you will be" then he bites her.

Rating and Comments:
This was an excellent episode that left us with several questions. Firstly, how far is Faith willing to go to save her friend Angel? The scene where she told Wesley there had to be a way other than killing Angelus was very telling about how deep her loyalty to Angel is. Don't forget she is the vampire slayer who has tried to kill Angel on several occasions in the past, as well as torturing Wesley. In addition, it showed how much she has changed, and grown, from the person she used to be, as has Wesley. If anything, it's as though the two have swapped places, with Faith having the conscience and Wesley willing to do anything to get what he wanted, something we have seen in the past when he kissed Fred. The old Wesley would never have kissed Fred knowing she was with Gunn, just as he would never have stabbed the girl to get the information he wanted.

The next question we were left with is what exactly is Connor and why did the sanctuary spell stop him? We know from previous episodes that his blood is normal because Lilah had it tested at W&H, and if anyone would have found any evidence of demon in his blood, Lilah would have. I think this is something we are going to have to wait and see about.

Next, Angelus shows Faith the similarities between them, but is it Angelus or Angel she is most similar to? On the surface of it, this is an easy one to answer because they are both seeking redemption and have committed terrible acts of violence. And both are murderers. But because of the nature of the relationship between Angel and Angelus if there are similarities between Faith and one, there will also be similarities between her and the other. It is up to her to make her choice as to which path she follows. She could easily give in and join Angelus in his whirlwind of mayhem, but she chooses to fight back when he says she's like him. What gives her the strength to do that is her desire to save the one person who believes in her, Angel. If she gives in, he's lost and she's not willing to give up on the person who wouldn't give up on her.
Rating 9/10 Finally, we have the question of Cordelia. What is she? What is the child she's carrying? Is she evil or is it the child that's controlling her? I, personally wonder if the Beast is the real daddy, but that could just be my warped mind! And one last question, will Fred and Gunn sort out their differences and get back together? I hope so.
