Opening credits

Main
The Hotel
Fred is reading a book when Gunn bursts through the doors shouting for Connor. He is dragging the hog-tied and unconscious Angelus with him. Gunn tells Fred to get her tranquilliser gun as he doesn't know how much time they'll have before Angelus wakes up, then he shouts for Connor again. Fred wants to know what happened. Gunn says "Wes called, I went."
Fred asks where Faith and Wesley are, hen Lorne comes to see what all the noise is about. He is a bit panicked to see Angelus. Connor appears to see what's going on and Gunn tells him they need help. Now Lorne asks where Wesley and Faith are, just as Wesley barges through the doors carrying the unconscious Faith. Wesley tells the others to get Angelus downstairs, but Fred wants to know what Angelus did to Faith. Wesley tells them she captured him. Gunn and Connor take Angelus down to the basement, while Fred and Lorne help Wesley with Faith.

Angelus is put back in his cage and shackled, whilst Faith is put in one of the bedrooms. Connor tells Gunn that Angelus fed from Faith because he can smell her blood on his breath. Then Angelus moves and says, "Kill you. Kill you."
Connor and Gunn quickly jump away from him, but he's still unconscious and talking in his sleep. Faith in her room is doing the same.

Lorne pulls Wesley to one side and says, "Tell me you did not shoot that girl full of junk and feed her to Angelus."
Wesley doesn't answer for a second, then tells him she knew what she was doing. Lorne doesn't believe this as he knows what the drug is and what it's side effects are.

Cordelia's room
Cordelia doesn't believe Faith is in a coma. She then realises that Angelus is in the hotel and asks Connor if he's locked up tight. He says she shouldn't worry he'll protect her, anyway, Faith did a good number on Angelus. Cordelia gets annoyed at this, shoves him against a wall and tells Connor she sees the way he looks at Faith and that he liked getting beaten by her. He denies this then asks how she managed to push him because of the sanctuary spell. She tells him she and the baby are different, but that he can't be loyal to them. Connor says he'll do anything for her. She smiles at this, then turns around and pretends to be nice, saying what had just happened was caused by her hormones being out of whack. She then sends Connor to see how Faith is because she's concerned.

Faith's room
Fred wants to know what the drug is. Lorne tells her it's a mystical opiate called Orpheus. The humans inject it and the vampires feed off them. Fred thinks Faith will be ok because she's a slayer, but Lorne says it's enchanted and the more you take the deeper you sink. Then Wesley says, "It leads you down to hell. And leaves you there"

Ellis Island 1902
People are disembarking from a ship. A bedraggled looking Angel walks through Angelus. He wants to know what's happening and Faith appears saying it's his flashback. Angelus is not happy that he's reliving Angel's life when it annoyed him so much the first time around. He also wants to know why Faith gets to be Marley's ghost. She tells him it's because she's dying and as far as she can work it out, she has to baby-sit him until the others put his soul back.

Early 20's Chicago
Angel is sitting on a bench by the road. Angelus is furious. He says it's happening again and he's not going to let it. Then a car roars around the corner and Angel runs across the road in front of it and saves a puppy. Angelus is livid, but Faith thinks it's funny that his hell is reliving Angel's good deeds.

The Hotel foyer
Wesley tells Fred and Connor they can only do one thing for Faith now and that's to finish what she started. Fred says they have to re ensoul Angel but Connor wants to put Angelus down. Then a voice from the doorway says, "I don't think so. I think you need a witch," It's Willow.
Connor is bemused that she's a witch, but she recognises him as Angel's "handsome yet androgynous son. And the sneers genetic? Who knew."

Fred and Willow get on very well, as they are so similar. Wesley wonders if Willow was called by magic but it turns out that Fred called her as the only living person to have re-ensouled Angelus. Willow asks for Cordelia, but Connor tells her she was shot and isn't up to having visitors, but Wesley says she'd want to see Willow as they have a history together.

Cordelia's room
Cordelia is in bed when Willow knocks on the door. Connor hovers until Cordelia tells him it's ok, she's fine, then he leaves. Willow asks Cordelia how she's been. Cordelia says "Higher power, and you?" "Ultimate evil, but I'm better now" replies Willow. Cordelia asks if Willow has seen Angelus yet, but Willow says she's going to avoid him because of the bad memories. She's just glad she doesn't have to be in the same room as him when she re-ensouls him. Cordelia isn't happy to hear that and asks Willow if she thinks she can pull it off. Willow points out that it was the first spell she learned, so she isn't going to forget how to do it. As they talk, Cordelia's hand moves under the bedclothes to where she has a knife hidden. Cordelia points out that they can't put Angel's soul back because it's in the jar. Cordelia says it's a tough nut to crack. This gives Willow an idea, all they have to do is break the jar and then do the spell to put Angel's soul back. Cordelia asks Willow to pass her a drink, but Willow is too excited to listen and she rushes out the door, shutting it just in time to block the knife Cordelia throws at her.

Faith's room
Lorne talks to Faith, then starts to sing to her.

A diner in the 1970's
Angelus walks into the diner and sits down. A disco version of the song Lorne was singing is playing on the jukebox. Angel walks past a still fuming Angelus who is even more annoyed when Angel puts 'Mandy' by Barry Manilow on the jukebox. Faith finds this funny but Angelus says the concerts were worse. A buzzing near him that he thinks is a fly is also annoying Angelus. A couple walks past Angel, they're hearts beating very loudly in his ears. Angelus tells Faith that every time someone gets near like that he feels the need to rip him or her apart and it's like a knife in his gut that he can't do it. Faith says it's not his gut, but Angelus tells her it isn't that cut and dried. She thinks that if Angel gets his soul back the monster is back in it's cage, but he's always there, deep inside Angel.

A robber holds up the diner and shoots the cashier. Angel rushes to help him but he dies. Angelus is enjoying this bit, until he's annoyed by the buzzing again and asks what it is.

Cordelia's room
Cordelia is holding a glowing mist in her hands. She is trying to wake Angelus up but nothing happens.

The foyer
Willow is preparing for the spell. Wesley is confused that Willow can break a sacred jar, but she points out that it's what's inside the jar that is sacred. She had to find a way to break the specific jar rather than break all the jars in the world.
"Good things come in jars. Peanut butter. Jelly. Those two-headed foetal pigs at the natural history museum. Come on everybody loves foetal pigs." She looks at Wesley when this doesn't get a reaction from him and he apologises saying he thinks his sense of humour is in a jar somewhere.
"It does seem that you've given in to the grumpy side of the force."
Wesley tells her it's not just the problems with Angelus, but that he's changed. He's seen darkness in himself, but she wouldn't understand. Willow points out that she flayed a guy alive and tried to destroy the world. He realises she does understand. He says he's never flayed anyone, but he did have a woman chained in a closet. Willow agrees that that's dark. Wesley says she seems exactly the same as when he left, then asks her if there are any other major changes he's not up on. She replies "Just little things. So. Fred. What's her story?" Wesley looks at her, then realises she's interested in Fred!

The diner
Angel is holding the cashier as he dies and keeps repeating how sorry he is. He is obviously having some sort of inner struggle. He steps away from the body as Angelus asks Faith "So, who's your big hero now?"
Faith can't understand why Angel has to feel guilty for something that wasn't even his fault, why he has to pay for everything, but Angelus tells her it's all about the choices you make. Angel goes to walk out of the diner, but then locks the door, and Angelus asks in a gleeful way, what's going to happen. Angel goes back over to the body of the cashier as Faith realises what's about to happen and says, "No, he won't".
Then Angel drinks from the dead cashier. Angelus says that he's always deep inside, soul or no soul. Faith pulls a disgusted face then her own neck starts to bleed where Angelus bit her. Faith points out that Angel was going to save the cashier, but Angelus asks if Angel let the cashier die on purpose through inaction. Then he tells Faith to look at Angel, that as a murderer she knows how blurry the line is between good and evil. Then he says, "you didn't think my hell was private, did you?" then Angel screams.

Faith's room
Faith is groaning in her coma. Lorne tells Connor that they cry for a while when they're at this stage as though they're letting go of something. Connor asks how long will it be (meaning before she dies) and Lorne tells him not long and that he can hold her hand if he wants. Then Wesley enters and Connor tells him he did the right thing and she was brave and died in battle. Wesley just says, "It's time" and he and Connor leave Lorne with Faith.

The hotel foyer
Fred is walking about with a candle and ringing a bell. Willow is getting ready for her spell. She tells Gunn what she's going to do and he goes down to the basement in case Angelus wakes up. Wesley asks Willow if she's ready. She is just saying it should be easy when she's thrown across the room by a magical force. She hears the voice of the Beasts master in her head telling her to stop because she will not interfere with what the voice is doing and she will never free the soul as long as it's under the protection of the voice. Cordelia is using a glowing crystal to speak and do the magic. Willow says something in Latin and the crystal disappears and Cordelia bites her tongue. Wesley tells Willow that the master is enormously powerful and Fred tells her the voice wants to stop them getting Angel's soul. Willow picks up her dropped marble, and holding it on the palm of her hand, she starts to recite a spell. The marble starts to glow and rises off her hand. Then Cordelia says, "You want to go Glenda? Then we'll go" and sends another bolt of magical energy to hit Willow. Connor asks Fred if she thinks Willow can handle what's happening, but when Willow straightens up from this last attack, her eyes are black and she says more Latin and the whole building starts to shake. Wesley says he thinks she can hold her own.

Faith's room
The shaking is upsetting the unconscious Faith. Lorne tells her to wait. That they'll get Angel back and it will all have been worth it. Then she shoots up to a sitting position holding her throat.

An alley
Faith wakes up lying on some sacking in a filthy alley. As she looks around to see where she is, Angelus's voice says, "It'll all be worth it."
She turns around and Angelus is lying where she had been seconds earlier. Then he levitates upright to a standing position. He tells her she fading fast he can feel it. Faith says she can hear a hollering in the distance (it's Willow casting her spell) and he's about to get what's coming to him, but Angelus says maybe not, he has friends in high places. Just then there's a crash behind Faith as Angel crashes into a dustbin while chasing a rat. He catches it and drinks it. Angelus is disgusted that ever since the cashier, twenty years earlier, Angel has only eaten rats. Faith says Angel's paying for what he did, but Angel replies "He's hiding from what he is." "I already know this crap so why do I have to go through it again?"
Then Angel replies, "Maybe because it's not about you. Jackass."

The hotel foyer
Wesley asks the others if they can feel something and Connor says there's something evil rising in the hotel.

Cordelia's room
Cordelia, her eyes white, is casting a spell.

The hotel foyer
Behind the gang in the foyer a dragon head appears. Willow tells them all to ignore it, then sends her magical marble to find the jar containing Angel's soul. The head disappears.

Cordelia's room
Cordelia isn't happy that her apparition didn't scare the others and is about to try something else when the glowing marble suddenly appears in front of her. She stops it from breaking the jar and she and Willow have a battle of magical strength, Willow trying to break the glass and Cordelia trying to stop her. Cordelia wishes it were a few weeks later as she tries to hold Willow's magic off. Connor

The hotel foyer
As Willow tells the magical marble to break the glass, Fred realises Connor is gone.

Cordelia's room
Cordelia is fighting to stop the jar being broken when Connor shouts from outside the room, asking if she's all right. Her concentration broken, Willows magic breaks the glass and Angel's soul is released. Cordelia is not happy.

The alley
Angelus is annoyed that it's Angel who's behind the rerun of his good deeds. Faith is pleased to see Angel, but he wonders why she's still there. She says she's waiting to see what happens, but when he asks then what, Angelus hits her and says, "Probably something like that."
Angel and Angelus fight. Angel tells Faith to get up, but she says she's dying. He says it's a lot easier than redemption but Angelus says humans are only here to suffer and die. Then as Angel and Angelus fight, Angel tells Faith he's not perfect, that he's done things he wished he could take back, even with a soul.

Cordelia's room
Connor breaks the door in and Cordelia hits him, then pretends she thought it was the floaty head back to hurt her and the baby. He asks if they are both ok and tells her the magic must have let something in. She agrees adding that it's something evil and that if Willow keeps going who knows what will happen. Connor says he'll stop Willow, but Cordelia tells him she's too powerful, the only way to stop it is to kill Angelus.

The hotel foyer
Willow, Fred and Wesley are preparing for the spell to give Angel back his soul.

Cordelia's room
Cordelia tells Connor he has to kill his father.

The hotel foyer
Willow and Fred start the spell.

Cordelia's room
Cordelia says she's fought as much as anyone to save Angel, but there comes a time when they can't do anymore, that killing Angelus is the only way to save their family and the rest of the world. She says, "Sometimes one death can spare infinite pain."

The alley
Angel and Angelus are still fighting. Angel shouts for Faith to wake up. He tells her he used to think there would come a time when he'd paid his dues, but Angelus hits him annoyed that he's not the centre of attention, "Anybody notice a battle with your alter ego going on here."

A corridor in the hotel
Connor is walking along thinking about the conversation he had with Cordelia. He asked her what he'd tell the others but she replied that they couldn't stop him if they didn't know. Then he asks about the sanctuary spell, but she says she can fix it, that they are special.

The hotel foyer
Willow is doing the spell to return Angel's soul. Connor watches for a while then heads down to the basement.

The alley
The fight is still continuing. Angel knocks Angelus away from him and goes to Faith. He tells her that she saw him drink and it doesn't get much worse than that. He goes on to say that their time is never up and she has to fight, but she replies that it hurts.

The hotel foyer
Willow is still doing the spell.

The basement
Connor goes down the stairs and knocks Gunn out.

The alley
Angel tells Faith to get up, that he needs her to fight. Angelus gets up and kicks Angel. He says Angel's soul is already in the ether, he can smell it, and he won't miss Angel's moralising. Then Faith stands up behind Angelus and he laughs saying she's getting back in the game. Then he hits her but the steel bar he's but she disappears.

Faith's room
Faith jumps up, much to Lorne's surprise, and runs out of the room.

The hotel foyer
Willow finishes the spell.

The alley
A bright light pours from Angel and Angelus as Angel's soul returns to him and Angelus is sucked back inside Angel.
The basement
Angel, lying on the floor of the cage says, "I need you to fight."
Connor, who is standing over him says, "I'm pretty clear about what you need" and goes to stake him but is stopped by Faith who says, "There's about to be a woopin'."
Faith and Connor fight. Lorne rushes through the door to the basement with Fred and Wesley, points at Faith and says, "She's alive. It's a miracle."
Faith easily beats Connor, knocking him against the bars of the cage where he is grabbed by Angel who says, "Connor, it's over. It's me. Really."

The hotel garden
Angel is looking out over the garden when Faith comes out. He asks her how she's doing and she says she feels like she's, "done mushrooms and been eaten by a bear."
Angel replies, "That about sums it up."
Faith is heading to Sunnydale with Willow (although she prefers the `bear`). Angel tells her they never stop fighting and he has a lot to thank her for. She tells him that that goes for her as well and if they start that it's only going to lead to hugging. Angel says they can't have that and they both go inside where the others are all waiting and Gunn is telling off Connor. Faith says goodbye to Wesley and then turns to Angel, "See, the Brits know how to say goodbye. Angel wanted to hug."
A defensive Angel says, "I didn't."
Fred and Willow come out of the office. Fred is getting very carried away talking about the Pergamon Codex and how she'd love to talk to Willow about it some day. Willow tells her she's seeing someone!

Faith and Willow are about to leave when Angel stops Willow. Faith tells her he's about to say how much he owes her, but Willow says she got a slayer out of the deal, so everyone's happy, then she hugs an uncomfortable looking Angel. As they leave, Willow turns and tells them all if they ever decide to resurrect Angelus again, to call her first, then they leave.

Angel turns to the others and says, "So we're back."
He's about to talk about what happened when Cordelia says, "Sorry Angel. But if this is the speech about how the worst is behind us, you may want to save it for later."
As she walks down the stairs everyone sees how pregnant she is.

Rating and Comments:
This is an excellent episode, made only better with the appearances of Faith and Willow. After everything that has happened over the past few episodes I was so pleased to see someone stand up to Cordelia, even if Willow didn't know who she was standing up to!

I always love any episode that shows us some of Angel's history. It was great to see the consistency of the Buffy/Angel universe with several references to previous episodes of either show. Faith sees Angel in the alley where Whistler found him before taking him to see Buffy for the first time. We discover why Angel sang Mandy on his first visit to Caritas. And we also see one of the fashion disasters Angel has previously said he would love to forget! Oh those check flares!

Much of this episode was about Faith realising how similar she and Angel are. As he said, he's not perfect. She had him on a pedestal, her saviour, and now she knows that he has done things wrong, even with a soul. So if he has a chance at redemption, then so does she. This episode was also important in showing so clearly the difference between Angel and Angelus and I think this will be a turning point for Angel himself, as he realises the two are different even if they do share many of the same attributes.
Rating 9/10 And finally, any episode that has a fight between Angel and Angelus has to be great!
