Inside Out

Previously on Angel…..
Various scenes with voice overs from some of the main characters……

Darla in the alley where Connor was born, "This child it's the one good thing we did together." Then she stakes herself and Connor is born.

Angel, "His name is Connor."

Skip, "Become a higher being."
Cordelia, "What, me?"

Cordelia as a higher being, "Get me out of here."

Cordelia, "The rain of fire, even blotting out the sun. Those were only the first steps to something bigger."

Angelus, "The Beast has a boss."

The Beast to Cordelia, "My apologies my master."

Cordelia, "Connor. We're having a baby."

Lorne, "A mystical pregnancy right under my beak."

Fred, "Having two part demon parents might explain the whoosh factor."

Cordelia, "Connor, before our baby's born I might ask you to do some things. For us."

Lorne to Angel, "I have this cleansing abracadabra to clear my muddled mind."
Cordelia, "Then you'll be able to read me?"

Lorne singing a chant for his mind clearing ceremony as Cordelia comes up behind him with a knife.

The lights go on and Angel is standing behind Cordelia.

Lorne, "Has Cordelia been a bad, bad girl?" and his magic 8-ball shows `definitely` as it's reply.

Continued
Angel is standing in front of Cordelia, "All this time. It was you, wasn't it?"
Cordelia goads Angel, "Took you long enough to work out. But nice try with the Lorne bait. You know there was a time when I would have seen that one coming aeons ago, long before it crossed your tiny little mind."
She boasts about how clever she is compared to him. Then she asks him what finally tipped him off and he tells her, "Tongue. Slip of" then we see Cordelia saying, "This, my sweet baby."
Angel says it was the `my sweet` that gave her away. It was the same phrase as the Beasts master used when he was talking inside Angelus' head. When she boasts that she brought the world down round his ears and two small words got him thinking, Wesley says that the circumstantial evidence pointed to her and with what Angelus had learned all they needed was to be sure. Angel says that this isn't Cordelia, but she replies that maybe he just doesn't know her very well. Angel grabs her by the throat and demands to know where Cordelia is. Then Connor drops through a window in the roof and fights with the gang. Angel tries to tell him it's not what he thinks, but Connor shoots him with Fred's tranquilliser gun and escapes with Cordelia.

As Cordelia leaves she gives Angel a very smug look as he asks, "What…are…you" before falling unconscious. The magic 8-ball rolls to the ground and reads `ask again later`.

Main
The Hotel foyer
Gunn walks in the door. He has only just got their message and he is shocked to see the state they are all in. Fred tells him Cordelia is evil. Gunn is shocked that he could step out for a few hours and return to find half the team has gone evil. Angel says Connor isn't evil, he's just confused but Wesley points out that she has been grooming Connor as her champion. The team then tries to work out what happened. Angel says the evil didn't start until Lorne did the spell to bring Cordelia's memory back. They woke up the monster. The thing inside Cordelia had been playing them from the start. They then go through the various things that had happened and work out how Cordelia managed to do them, for instance spiking Angel's blood and killing Manny. Gunn points out that when he came in `faux Cordy` didn't have any blood on its clothes so how did it kill Manny? Wesley says it was like Lizzy Borden (who killed her parents with an axe), it wasn't wearing any clothes. This meant it only had to have a quick sponge down and there would be no blood.

Taking out the priestesses was easier, it just had to slip out when they were busy. It also took Angels soul. Fred asks about the vision of the spell to re-ensoul Angel. Angel says it was a classic misdirection. While everyone was watching Angelus, the spell actually stopped Lorne from reading people. Angel also tells them it was Cordelia who let Angelus out of the cage. Wesley then realises that it was Cordelia who killed Lilah, but Angel says they don't know it is Cordelia. Fred then says they need to find out what she's got `baking in her oven` and Gunn says, "Evil and pregnant, I'm guessing it ain't cookies!"

A deserted room
Cordelia asks Connor if the others could have followed them. Connor tells her he was careful, then asks why they were trying to kill her. She says he knows why, it's because they are afraid of her, him and the baby. Connor says he felt she was in danger and he followed her scent then he asks why Angel did it. Cordelia tells him it's because Angel hates Connor because he has her. She then says Connor was right, that Angel is an animal and he's turned everyone against them. Then she hugs Connor who says he'd kill them all before he let them hurt her.

The Hotel
Angel has been out looking for Connor and Cordelia. Wesley says that if Connor doesn't want to be found, he won't be, it's a waste of time looking for him. Angel thinks he's good at wasting time after all, the information was in front of him and he couldn't see it. Wesley tells him that the whole point was to use Angel's emotions about losing Cordelia to Connor against him to cloud his judgement and at least Angel had a reason for letting things happen. Wesley is thinking about Lilah. Angel says that Lilah and him weren't exactly friends and Wesley says, "You were mortal enemies. Why should you care what happened to her?"
Angel replies, "Because you did."

After a moment Wesley tells Angel they're getting nowhere with the search for information. Angel asks about pandimensional texts, but Wesley says they need to go to the source. Angel isn't happy about this as he says the Powers must have seen the creature masquerading as Cordelia and what was happening to all of them and they did nothing. He says the Powers didn't stop it because they didn't want to get their hands dirty, but what they need is someone who was in the middle of everything.

Another dingy room
Cordelia is moaning about the accommodation. Connor says he could find somewhere else but Cordelia says it will do.

Connor still can't believe that Angel tried to kill Cordelia. Then he suggests that maybe it wasn't Angel, maybe Angelus tricked them all again. Cordelia tells him it was Angel. Connor then talks about the things Angel said about him making a difference and being a champion. Cordelia says these were all lies intended to keep Connor under his control. When Connor says he thought Gunn, Fred, Wesley and Lorne were good, Cordelia asks him what that means, that being good is only rules they have used to control him. They are special and don't need to live by those rules.

Cordelia's room
The team are searching Cordelia's room. They haven't found much. Angel is going to see Skip and if he isn't back in a few hours, as Gunn puts it, "You're dead. We're screwed. End of the world."
Fred suggests Angel could just stay with them.

Skips lair
Angel fights a demon then descends some stairs and finds Skip. He asks when was the last time Skip saw Cordelia? Skip is surprised that Cordelia told them he was her guide and says that Cordelia has ascended to a higher being. Angel tells him she's back and that either the being controlling Cordelia didn't want Skip warning them and has played him for a dupe, or he was in on it from the start. Skip says, "Angel. Buddy. Whatever's going on? Not a dupe!" and a sword like spine shoots out from his arm.

Angel and Skip fight but Angel is having a much harder job beating Skip than he did when he rescued Billy from the fire. Skip says the worst part was having to let Angel beat him. Did Angel really think that someone built like he was would be so easy to beat? Angel is badly beaten by Skip.

Connor and Cordelia's hideout
Cordelia tells Connor Angel won't give up until he's found them, but Connor says let him come. Cordelia calls him to her side and puts his hand on her stomach so he can feel the baby move. She then says she wishes they could just be left alone to be happy. Connor says he'll make the others leave them alone, then asks how long it will be before the baby comes. Cordelia says a week or two, but she knows Angel will find him before that unless there's a way to make the baby come early.

Skips lair
Skip is still beating Angel. He asks what happened to Cordelia, but Skip ignores him. Angel repeats the question and Skip just says he heard him the first time. Then he says that Angel is going to die without knowing what happened to the woman he loved. Angel grabs a chain and uses it to rip the spine out of Skip's arm, and then he beats him, finally ripping off one of Skip's horns with the chain. Angel then wraps the chain round his fist and hits Skip several times, finally knocking him out.

The hotel
Fred, who is searching through a book, thinks she's found something when a light appears in the foyer and Angel and an unconscious Skip appear. Gunn looks at them both and asks what happened. Angel says, "We had words."
Angel tells them that whatever has happened to Cordelia, Skip is at the centre of it and they need to bind him to this dimension.

A dark alley
A girl is cornered by a vampire who says he loves virgins. As he's about to bite her he turns to dust. Connor asks the girl if she's all right. She is distraught and keeps thanking him until he hits her and knocks her out.

Connor and Cordelia's hideout
Cordelia tells Connor the girl is perfect. She asks if he got everything she wanted, then she says she knows what his heart is telling him, but that it will lie if he lets it. He has to trust her. He can mourn for the girl, but he mustn't forget that she is one of the average people who fill the world and her death for their baby will elevate her to something more than she is.

The Hotel
Skip is being held in a circle of powder that creates a force around him. Gunn asks why he doesn't come out if it's such a simple trick, but Skip just says to give him time. Angel tells him he'll have plenty of that when they bind him to this dimension permanently, and unless he wants Fred to do the spell, he'd better tell them all he knows about Cordelia. Angel asks where the real Cordelia is? Skip tells him that the thing that turned his life into a ring of fire is the real Cordelia, or at least she's in there somewhere. The thing that took her over arranged for her to become a higher being.

Connor and Cordelia's hideout
Cordelia is sitting on the floor chanting. The girl is tied up in the next room. She wakes up with a start to find Connor in front of her. Connor apologises to her, but she begs him to let her go. Then Connor hears a whispered voice. It says, "Listen."
Connor looks around and asks if there's someone there and the voice replies, "I'll always be here, close to your heart, after all……"
Darla appears, "isn't that where a mother belongs?"
Darla tells him she has been sent by the powers to give him a message. Connor doesn't believe she's his mother, but she tells him she has his mothers memories and feelings and aren't those the things that make a person. The girl begs to be freed and Darla says she knows that sound that it was in the people she murdered. Darla walks over to the girl who obviously can't see her. Connor says his mother is dead, but Darla tells him she'll always be a part of him because he shared his soul with her once. She had never felt so close to any living thing as she had to "her beautiful boy."
Connor asks why she left him before he was born, and did she hate him that much? Darla tells him she did what she had to, her life for his. She tells him she caused destruction and pain and he was the only good thing she ever did and she would die every day for the rest of eternity for him, and he repays her by killing this girl. Connor tells Darla that they need the girl for his and Cordelia's baby, but she asks why he'd want to anoint his baby with the blood of an innocent.

The Hotel
Angel wants to know what has taken over Cordelia. When Skip doesn't look like he's going to tell them Angel tells Fred to start the binding spell. Skip stops her and says the thing doesn't have a name, he calls it master or unspeakable evil. Angel doesn't think it makes any sense as Cordelia was made a higher being for bearing the visions, but Wesley suggests that maybe this thing manoeuvred Cordelia into getting the visions in the first place. Angel realises that everything that has happened to Cordelia in the last few years has led to this, but Skip says not just Cordelia. Everything that has happened to them all has led to this moment in time. Two vampires having a child who is now himself about to become a father was to allow the being to come to life and the only way to stop it is to kill Cordelia. Skip says the creature won't let go of something as sweet as she is until it has something new. Fred asks what will happen to Cordelia and Skip tells them she'll be drained of her life force during labour.

Wesley asks Angel what he's going to do and Skip says, "The only thing he can do. Kill the woman he loves and save the world. At times like this it's really gotta suck being you."

Angel asks how he can find Cordelia and Skip says he'd go with the Bushundi ritual but they'd need a special paw for that. Lorne says they have one, that Cordelia has been using it for a back-scratcher. Skip isn't happy and tries to pretend he meant something else.

Connor and Cordelia's hideout
Connor tells Darla that everyone hates him and Cordelia because they are special, that they wanted to kill him before he was born. Darla tells him as soon as they saw him, they loved him, and that they are scared of what he's done, not what he is. Connor says they'll feel the same when they hold his child.

Darla tells him he has a choice, something more precious than he'll ever know. As a vampire she killed without remorse because she didn't have a soul, but what was his excuse? Connor asks if she thinks he wants to do this, but Darla asks why he's doing it then, because Cordelia tells him to? Darla tells him there are things happening that she can't tell him about. He can stop it, but it has to be his choice. Connor tells Darla she's been gone a long time, how would she know what he had to do, but she tells him she knows because they shared a soul, she feels his pain and anger, but most of all she feels how good he is deep down.

The Hotel
Gunn and Fred are watching Angel in the office. Fred asks what Gunn thinks Angel will do. Gunn says, "What he has to. Like he always does."
Fred asks if he thinks it will make a difference if they are all just pieces being moved about a board, but Gunn says if that's the case, then they'll just kick it over and start a new game. Gunn says the final score can't be rigged, but you never know when you are taking the last shot.

Lorne and Wesley enter. They have a map with Cordelia's whereabouts on it and Angel takes the map. Gunn goes to get ready to go, but Angel stops him, he won't let them carry the burden of killing Cordelia.

Connor and Cordelia's hideout
Connor is untying the girl when Cordelia comes in and asks what he's doing. When he says it's wrong she makes fun of him then says Angel has used magic to trick him. He is making Connor have a vision of a poor imitation of Darla. Darla tries to convince Connor to stand his ground but he turns on her and says, "You are not my mother." Then he drags the girl out to the other room.
Darla begs him to stop what's happening, but Cordelia kills the girl and says to him, "There, that wasn't so hard, was it?"

Connor and Cordelia's hideout
Cordelia is lying on the floor in labour, chanting again. She tells Connor they have to do this now and he puts his hand in the dead girls' blood, then puts it on Cordelia's stomach. The blood disappears, and then the earth starts to shake.

The Hotel
The earth is shaking. Fred asks what's happening as they get thrown about. Skip tells her it's the end of the world for her as he steps out from the now broken circle.

Connor and Cordelia's hideout
Connor rushes to Cordelia. He thinks something is wrong, but Cordelia says the beginning of a New World is coming. Then Angel, standing behind them says, "Or not."

The Hotel
Skip fights with all the gang. He is gloating that if they can't beat him, what hope do they have against the big evil.

Connor and Cordelia's hideout
Angel tells Connor Cordelia lied to them all it's not really her, but Connor doesn't believe him. Cordelia tells Connor not to listen. Connor shouts at Angel to leave them alone, then starts fighting with him, while Cordelia screams for him to kill Angel.

The Hotel
Skip grabs Fred when Gunn attacks him with a sword. Skip easily knocks him away, and then Wesley starts shooting at him. It does no good as the bullets ricochet everywhere, the final one hitting Wesley's hand. Then Wesley sees the wound on Skip's head where Angel tore off the horn and shoots into it. Skip collapses, dead.

Connor and Cordelia's hideout
Connor and Angel are still fighting. Angel beats Connor and says; "Do you think I want to do this? I don't have a choice."
Then he picks up his sword and goes to Cordelia. He's about to behead her, when a beam of light shoots from her stomach and throws him backwards. An octopus like creature appears in the centre of the light and as Angel and Connor watch, it turns into a woman. Angel jumps up to kill her, but he falls to his knees in front of her, as does Connor, and in a voice filled with awe says, "Oh my God. You're beautiful."
The woman smiles and says, "Angel."

Rating and Comments:
Once again a great episode (as every one seems to have been recently)!

The episode started continuing the theme of people being `played`, and told us how Cordelia managed to play the others from way back, while the nameless one has played her.

The main theme however was the importance of free will and our ability to make choices. Both Connor and Angel have to make some serious choices. Connor can save the girl and make the right choice; or kill her and become part of the evil that will arise from his action, or rather inaction. As Darla tells him, his ability to make decisions is precious, but he throws it away, doing what he's told. The repercussions of the girl's death are going to echo with Connor for a long time to come.

Connor also finds out about the choice Darla made, that let him live. She chose to exchange her life for his because he was the one good thing she had ever done.

Angel's choice is a no win situation; if he doesn't kill Cordelia, the woman he loves, she will die or end up a vegetable after the birth and the world will come to an end; or he can kill her and save the world. He knows what he has to do, but that doesn't make the decision any easier.

And of course, in the end both Angel and Connor have lost their free will and are under the thrall of the woman who is Connor's daughter and Angel's granddaughter! In a period of about 6 months (I'm guessing here) Angel has gone from not being able to father a child as a vampire, to becoming a father and grandfather! And both the offspring are adults already!

And finally, a last couple of points. First, isn't it great to see Darla back again! That girl has made more comebacks than Frank Sinatra has!

And second. I really don't know if I can forgive the writers for making Skip a baddy! He was such a quirky character, who got his just desserts, but I, for one, will miss him!
