Continued
The street
It is day and people are looking at the sky with the sun blocked out. A news report tells that only Los Angeles is blotted out and the mayor will be making a speech about it later in the day.

The hotel
Fred has been doing research on the item the Beast used to blot out the sun and is feeling tired. She says she needs Wesley, much to Gunn's annoyance. She changes it to his expertise. Gunn complains that Wesley disappeared soon after Electro-girl skipped town.

Connor complains that they are all looking in the wrong place because the answer is among them. He blames Angel and tells Cordelia that she saw him herself making a pact with the Beast. Cordelia tells him that it was Angelus, not Angel, but Connor says he is Angelus. Cordelia replies that he has never seen Angelus and Gunn says he hasn't seen him either, but he thinks it might be about time they did if there's a chance Angelus has information on the Beast. Cordelia says there isn't a chance of that happening because Angelus was cursed with his soul so that he could pay for all those he slaughtered. She tells them the only way to bring Angelus back was to take Angels soul away, but to do that he would have to experience a moment of pure, perfect happiness and, as Cordelia puts it, "Happiness of any kind is in kinda short supply."

The office
Angel has been singing for Lorne, but Lorne couldn't read anything about the Beast. Angel can't understand why he can't remember anything about the Beast despite being able to remember every evil deed Angelus committed. Lorne says that if it's in there it's buried deep within Angelus. Angel says that even if he wanted to let Angelus out, he couldn't.

A room filled with candles
A ceremony is being carried out while a fight goes on outside. Then Wesley enters. He tells the man carrying out the ceremony that he believes he has skills Wesley requires, as he needs a soul extracting.

Opening credits

Main
The Hotel foyer
Angel comes out of the office and tells them they've found nothing out. Fred tells him that the device she's been studying has no power without the orb the Beast swallowed. Angel says they are not down for the count as "it's a devils playground out there."
Connor tells him it's just the way he likes it and Angel asks if he's got something to say. Connor tells him it's all Angels fault: the Beast, the darkness and Cordelia not wanting to be with him, it's Angel's fault his life sucks.

Lorne wants them to get back to the pep talk, but Fred says she'd rather they had a plan, then Wesley walks in with Woo Pang the shaman who can extract his soul. Angel tells Wesley he had no right bringing him there without talking to Angel first, but Wesley tells him he has no choice in the matter. Angel says it's not going to happen, that Wesley has no idea what Angelus is. Then he walks out into the garden.

The Garden
Cordelia follows Angel out. She talks about all the plants dying without the sun. Then she tells him she agrees with him not wanting Angelus back because she knows what he's like and the others don't understand. Angel asks her if she thinks the Beast is using him, but she says no, then, maybe. He says he's already a danger to them, but Cordelia says not like Angelus would be because he's so smart. Angel looks at her then says she thinks Angelus is smarter than he is. She says he's smart, but there's something about evil that `jacks up the IQ points`, but in a twisted way and Angel says, "Like the Beast."
Cordelia agrees saying, "They think alike."

Angel stands and walks back into the hotel and starts giving orders for what he'll need to build a very strong cage. Gunn asks if Angel thinks that will hold the Beast, but Wesley says it's not for the Beast, it's for Angel.

The basement
They work together to build a strong cage. Lorne decides to sit "this one out upstairs."
Angel tells Connor that he knows Connor likes to think he's the enemy, but if the spell works he will be the enemy and whatever Angelus says, Connor is to remember that Angel is his father, no matter what Angelus says. Then he tells Connor that if anything goes wrong he'll have to kill Angelus. Connor quickly says, "OK."

The basement
Angel is locked in the cage with the shaman. He has a glass jar that will hold Angel's soul.

Angel is strapped to a bed and the shaman tells him to close his eyes, then speaks in a foreign language. Finally he says, "It's time. To say goodbye." Then he attacks Angel.
Angel asks for some help from the others and they stop the shaman killing him. The shaman asks why he would help them when he works for the Beast. When they try to get information from him he kills himself. Angel asks if he has anything on him about the Beast and Gunn discovers that the shaman has words written all over his body, and they realise that's why there's no information on the Beast in any of the books. Wesley translates it, to find that there is a weapon that could kill the Beast but the group who were going to use it were killed by the Beast's acolytes before they could use it. It was hidden somewhere so they have to find out what and where it is. Cordelia tells them she can see it. It's a sword and it's in LA.

Angel tells Wesley accusingly that there's a sword, and he was going to have a shaman bring Angelus back then cut off his head. Wesley apologises, much to Angel's surprise.

Caves under LA
The gang questions the odds of a sword being under LA that just happens to kill the Beast. Cordelia says she doesn't think it is just under LA, but in many places at once.

They find a tunnel that goes deeper and Connor rushes ahead. As the others follow he stops them because he's found something. There are chains hanging from the ceiling with bells on them. If a bell rings a wooden stake shoots out from the wall. They make their way through the gauntlet and Cordelia almost rings one of the bells, but Wesley stops her. Then Wesley rings a bell and Angel grabs him and rushes through the bells avoiding the stakes. When they get to the other side, it's a dead end. Wesley recognises the writing but he gets the wrong code, and when he pushes one of the stones in the wall a stake goes through his hand. They try it again, and the wall starts to lift. Angel and Connor hold the wall while the others go through. Connor insists on them both leaving the wall together and they roll out of the way. Angel tells Connor and Wesley to go one way while he and Cordelia go the other. Connor wants to go with Cordelia but she tells him not to be silly.

As they walk along, Cordelia apologises to Angel for the decisions she's made and she wishes she could take back. She says she doesn't know if he could ever…. Then she sees the place she saw the sword but it isn't there. Angel realises that the light in the room is coming from somewhere and puts his hand into it. It is a dimensional hub that allows the sword to be in hundreds of places at once. He pulls his hand out and he's holding the sword. Then the ball of light goes red and the place starts to collapse, fire shooting from the ground. Cordelia is trapped but Angel jumps over the flames and saves her. They both end up on the ground with Angel groaning. Cordelia thinks he's hurt, but he says he's good, he missed the pointy end, and he pulls the sword out from under him. Then Cordelia gets upset and says they could have died without her being able to tell him that she made a mistake with Connor. She has seen all the evil things Angelus has done but when she looks at Angel she only sees the good he's done. Then Angel tells her he doesn't care what she's done in her past either, and they kiss. Connor walks in and sees them then runs off.

Angel goes after him. Angel tells Connor not to move, but he does and Angel gets a wooden dart in the shoulder, as the whole room is booby-trapped. Connor tells Angel everything in the world is harsh and cruel because of him and they fight. Angel asks him if he thinks he's the only person who's wished his father was dead, but Connor says his already is. Then Connor says Cordelia was his, but Cordelia comes in and tells him she was never his, and Connor runs off.

The hotel
Angel, Cordelia and Wesley get back with the sword. Gunn asks if he can play with it and manages to cut a sofa in half. Wesley tells the others Connor is patrolling when they ask where he is.

Lorne has heard rumours of some evil rising in the warehouse district, so Angel says that's where they'll start their search for the Beast.
Fred says, "Wait. We've found some relevant passages in the Pranesh Gamarra which we were able to cross reference with Woo Pang's …butt."
Gunn says, "Either he's got one funky mole or we figure there's only one way to kill the Beast."
The Beast's brain has to be pierced with the sword and the energy that blocks the sun will be released. Unfortunately, nothing human will survive at close range and even Angel may not survive. Cordelia tells him he's not going to fight the Beast on his own, but he says he has to. Then he tells them they've all made a difference, not just as friends or lovers, but as champions. Cordelia goes to him and tells him she can't lose him when they are just starting whatever will happen between them, but Angel promises he will come back for her, but first he has to find the Beast. The door smashes open and the Beast comes in. Angel says, "Oh, there it is."

Angel tells the others to get out, then he and the Beast fight. The Beast snaps the sword, grabs Angel by the throat and lifts him up. Then the Beast is hit over the back with an axe and turns to find Connor standing there. He and the Beast fight and the Beast tells him how much like Angelus he is. Connor says, "His name is Angel." Then Angel puts a shard of the sword through the Beast's head and it explodes leaving a pile of dust.

Connor tells Angel it was never him Cordelia wanted and she was too old for him anyway.

The others come back in and Cordelia says to Angel, "You did it."
Angel replies, "We did it. All of us."

Angel's room
Angel is looking out the window. Cordelia tells him it must be hard bringing the light back but not to be able to go out in it himself, but Angel says there's nowhere else he'd rather be than there with her. Then she and Angel kiss. Angel tries to stop them, but Cordelia tells him they've waited long enough, then they start to undress each other. As they make love something happens to Angel and he says Buffy's name then collapses on the bed in pain, wrapping his arms around himself. Then the pain leaves his face and he lies back and we see he is dressed. The shaman says, "The vision becomes reality. It is done." Then Angel turns his head and looks at Cordelia and she says, "Angelus." And he laughs.

Rating and Comments:
This is a brilliant episode that, as usual, leaves us with a lot of questions, not least of which is whether the vision Angel has that makes him lose his soul is what he actually wants, or what the shaman thinks he wants. It would be typical of Angel to only be happy when the whole gang are involved in saving the world so that they get their share of the credit and praise for it. But this could also be Wesley's view of things, as Wesley could have told the shaman on their way to the hotel what he needed to make Angel see in the vision so that he would lose his soul.

And in Angel's `perfect happiness` dream, Connor calls him Dad and they end up on good terms, with Connor giving his blessing to Angel and Cordelia getting together.

And, of course, the Beast is dead!

It was a nice touch to have Angel say Buffy's name as he and Cordelia made love. That would be a definite `oops` moment that Cordelia would never let him live down!

I loved the little joke where Cordelia looked down at her stomach and said "I always knew you two would get me in trouble", as she was pregnant in real life when this was filmed and the wardrobe people are fighting a valiant battle to hide her bulge.
Rating 8/10 A really excellent episode made all the better by the fun we know we'll have with the return of Angelus!
